I can do better than that. Our cottages (Grade 2 listed) had the original cast? iron windows in at the time of listing. The CO in place at the time gave LBC for them to be replaced with UPVC copies. We're planning on doing some work and, as part of the LBC application, will be asking if we can reinstate the original windows that are currently sat in our garage (having been brought indoors from round the back of the garage where they had been left to rust).

Isn't that dreadful! i was depressed looking at these details the last time you referred to them. To read the listing description along with them is worse. As you say, why bother?

Its a truely gruesome sight isn't it? There is nothing inside or out worth listing. And the poorly executed 'modern' decor and furnishings finish it off. £135K? I wouldn't look at it.

It will be interesting to see if the LBC is given to re-instate... ye gods! CO? BF more like! However, I suppose it's the fault of those who sought permission possibly...


It's been passed to SAVE and then on to the Geo Group Welsh case officer to see if there is any record of consents being given. Nothing would surprise me though.

A bit OT, but where did you get the list description from? are the Welsh lists available on the net somewhere now?

It was an estate agent's web site that showed the way - then the Georgian Soc in Wales was contacted.

No idea what it was like before ... the property HAS been sold - most likely to a second home owner or a buy-to-let-*****d to whom 135K is nothing for a house and who care less than 2d about it's history.

I'd like to see them forced to put it all back ....

Wish something would knock a hole in the buy-to-let market and make places affodable for the local population - 135K is beyond the dreams of many in N W Wales.

The loss of detailing i.e. curved sashes, vertical astragels and small panes in the basement windows have an imperceptible effect on the character of the building.

Sad - was in Lakes yesterday and those nice old houses which surround Windermere - one was having its guts ripped out and placcy windows installed. The skip outside had a door - sort of late arts and crafts stuff, timber with leaded light window in it ... so I dread to think what is replacing it.

I also got a leaflet yesterday from a placcy window company http://www.finessegroup.co.uk (note - only in the small print do I read that's actually Finesse uPVC Ltd) which makes interesting reading - greener than grass now are placcy windows. When I get more time I will post more details. I note that the blurb says their windows are 'more environmentally friendly' - yes more than what? A nuclear attack?


Nice bit though - you can trade in your old windows:

'As we are actively looking to encourage sustainability and recycling, we are NOW offering our customesr the opportunity to trade in their old windows against their new ones. The old windows will be recyled and a discount allowed on your new windows and doors...'

Eh? Sustainability? What???

With the new house sale rules and regulations coming into effect soon, what do you expect?
The majority of people living in older houses will be made to feel second class and encouraged to fit all the latest trends of eco this and that.
Or they will have to parade the "undesirable" features of their older house with suitable improvement recommendations.
So that means single glazing, solid walls and old doors will be penalised because they don't come upto the latest eco plucked-from-the-sky figure for insulation.

The whole thing is a disaster waiting to happen for ALL older property.
