Who was the coldest last night?

Travelled 200 miles to do some more renovation on cottage, after checking on BBC weather that there hadn't been any snowfall in Builth Wells. Turned out to be minus 17 C and at least 6 inches of snow....

This is Odie,I have read the above to him and he says he will leave the leg on the kitchen table alone now!

Gorgeous - does Odie have any brothers, Phil? He looks my ideal ginger cat; he so reminds me of Solomon, who owned us when I was in my teens!

Yep,he had a few brothers and sisters but he was the only ginger in the litter,he is our third ginger in 35 years,Henry after ginger Henry vlll,garfield and now Odie (not sure why!) and our son now has one called Nerbil (not sure why either!) phil.

Our Westie is more of a behavioural scientist than a hunter. She will lie happily in the garden, watching with great interest while the rats steal the bird food. The only one that she's ever pounced on was one that I had just despatched with my airgun. :roll:

Our daughter's terrier, on the other hand, is a born hunter. She was said by the sellers to be a Fell Terrier (which she looks nothing like), but we think she's a rare old mixture - perhaps with a strong influence of Parsons Jack Russell.

She lives to hunt, and is lightening fast.

Having carefully put draught excluder around the edges of the front door, and hung a lovely thick baglined curtain over the door with a 'sausage' at the bottom I am soooo cross to find that the little bit around the yale latch and keep is letting in a howling blast of ice cold air------

It may be because I have had a glass or two of red wine but I love the way period property folk devote so much of our time to driving out draughts and fighting the cold. I just love the Winter when there's snow and ice. It's a real life, and it takes hard work and energy laying fires, making curtains and sausage dogs, and piling on the jumpers. People who live in modern, centrally heated homes don't know what they are missing. We sleep with blankets and dressing gowns piled on the bed and argue over who's turn it is to get up in the morning to make the coffee. The only one who's warm is the cat who lives in the Aga heated kitchen. The sitting room is an abomination while the builder finishes the work on the fire place and has to have the french doors open all day. I just love it and wouldn't have it any other way. Most people don't understand this way of life - aren't we lucky? :lol:

Vicky - I agree with you; I love getting up to feed the animals when there is snow on the ground and it is freezing. Also it means when I come in, the house suddenly seems warm again!

Yes, my daughter's terrier has been suffering from a fur pigmentation problem for some time. She started out as tan in colour but, as the photo shows, her coat has been turning white in large patches, during the past two years. Recently the process has become much faster - as I said above.

It's my experience that they manage well. But then they know that they're going to have deep snow every winter, for most of the winter. So the investment in snow clearance equipment is worth it.

I remember one December night in the Swedish town of Eskilstuna, where there was a massive snowfall in a matter of hours. The streets were clear at 7.00pm, and by midnight (when we staggered back to the hotel from a boozy business dinner) there was over half a metre of snow on the ground.

At 8.00am the next morning, this had increased to over a metre. But the streets had been completely cleared of snow, pavements and all, by the clearance team who worked through the night.

By dumping it over here of course, under cover of darkness. That's why it's all in the East. Their silent snow-laden gliders can't reach the West. 8)

I bet they're using all the PPUK house pictures posted on here from Narfuk and Suffuk, East Angular and Lincolnshire as navigation points.

No no no - that's not the Scandinavians... that's how the Swiss blow their snow over here when it is the South Coast that is hit hardest:
