Who has the oldest, and who the youngest "period" property?

Deeds back to 1735. Believed to be originally 1 dwelling. Split into two at some point. Deeds relate to 3 cottages so one was demolished at some point after 1949. Various modifications over the years. Half modernised in 1980's. (It still had gas lights and no inside toilet and washing facilities even in 1983, original roof height wouldn't allow mod-cons so extended upwards). Converted back to one dwelling 2005 to current and lots more to do.

View from south almost all of footprint of house matches 1840 map exactly so even the extensions are pretty old

Sadly i just dont have a photo of the "front". The original front is now the back if that makes sense?

1350 (well, the foundations which are invisible but holding the bathroom up are part of the city wall), all the rest is 1880 except the ground floor front wall and rather more of the interior than I'd have liked (1998)

Sometime between 1913 and 1918, so a baby in comparison to (almost) everyone here. (There are almost no residential buildings in situ in the city that date to pre-1820 - isn't that crazy! The whole city is a baby...! )

I too am in awe of all of you who commit the time and energy to maintain such beautiful old homes, and tangible connections to the past - just being touch buildings that old is very special. When I lived in one of the old Oxford colleges I used to run my hand along the walls and wonder about all those who spent time within the same rooms.
(Gareth - I lived in a terrace near Magdalen gate for a bit. Near you i think...?)

Ours is supposed to be late 1600s but there's no hard evidence as there are no deeds or any information from previous owners - it's what the listing says and books on Witney say our street is mostly seventeenth and eighteenth century. I think I read somewhere that there were houses on our street back to 1300s so I like to think our house is built on their foundations... There were no house numbers in our street till 1900 so researching it is very difficult but the tithe map from 1840 shows that the houses in our little terrace haven't changed shape at all.

Listing give age as "C17" (listed aug 81) I know that many things have changed since and that the property was here during the civil war (we have a garden full of musket and cannon balls!)not yet retrieved our deeds but do not expect them to be a great deal of help as it was an estate house.It looks quite old up in the roof which has a lime/ash floor.

I have no idea how old our place is, it wasn't in private ownership until 1924, according to our deeds. The Records Office for our county, Monmouthshire, doesn't have a map of our area before the 1841 Tithe Map. We now have to travel to the National Library of Wales to find out.

Early 1700's for the main house, but deeds talk about what is now a small annexe being the "old meeting house" . It is, therefore, a mystery I'm happy to let continue being a mystery.

I'm so embarrassed that you should know about my back, Catherine. I do hate to talk about it.

But of course almost every property mentioned in this thread is younger than my back. I've been cursed with a back that's centuries older than I am.

But please don't tell anyone else.

Ha ha , well I can still smell it, but my other half tells me it's all in my mind! There is one room that I barely venture into, it's off the kitchen, and was used as a bedroom by the previous owners ( it will be our dining room eventually). I swear it still smells of wee. We have since found out from neighbours that the fella who lived here (and died on the downstairs loo) was 37 stone and really quite poorly for a long time, so I guess that kind of explains his poor aim :? Shame really. I also think the downstairs loo still smells of wee, but nobody else can smell it. Wee smell apart, I bloody love this house, I love all the space, and it's quirkiness. Thanks for having me back!!! x

My property is "only" 1830s-ish, but it may have been the worst condition lived-in house when the former owner died in June this year. I did not realise that occupation had been so recent when I saw it first in August, with several holes in the bedroom ceilings, mould and dampness throughout, plus a kitchen sink with a disconnected outlet pipe, not to mention the issues with the roof, ivy and gutters (see previous posts and my blog at http://houseintheenchantedforest.blogspot.com/).

However, I'd like to expand this topic to other items. This may not be the oldest wheelbarrow but I reckon it's the worst condition one in commercial use. As you can see it still has a function for the scaffolders.

I think you've found yourself a genuine period "storybook" wheelbarrow, Matthew!
It has that "drooping at the edges" look, and would fit right in!

Judging from the care and attention shown to their equipment (well, their firm's equipment) by our scaffolders, I'd hazard a guess that it's a fairly young wheelbarrow that has been severely abused during it's poor short life (the tyre seems in very good condition).

Those fittings can make a big dent when thrown off a roof and I wouldn't be surprised if it has cushioned the fall of some short length of pole in it's time as well.

If we're drifting off topic onto wheelbarrows, I'd like to nominate my Grandads. It was at least 30 years old when he died in '76 which makes it about pensionable age now and still going strong. My Mum has it now.

My house, by the way, is a relatively sprightly 1880 end terrace. The former owners informed me that the doormat and hall lightshade were there when they bought the place in 1956 and I am terrified that if I replace them, I will be accused of destroying the historical fabric of the house!

I've just been looking at a book on Mediaeval Norwich and have discovered that our street probably began to exist when the Normans took over (evidence being the appearance on the maps of the Castle and quite a few local streets).
So there's a chance that the odd shred of Norman stuff is buried in (or, most likely, under) our house.

Since then the houses in the street have been demolished, built, demolished again, rebuilt,modernised, and generally hacked around a bit until Listing happened. Since when absolutely nothing has been allowed to change.
