I have also owned cast iron pans - Wiki says:

Hi,

the Hetas engineer came this morning to have a look at the job (still waiting for quote with baited breath!) - when I mentioned Aarrow stoves he strongly recommended I don't get one - he says they often go wrong, and he gets called back out to them quite often. Whereas the Clearview, Jotul and Morso are very reliable, he rarely has trouble with them, and Hunter & Esse are quite good too.

Am very glad I spoke to him before buying anything!

he said that he's got a customer now, for example, whose door won't shut, but was generally not impressed with the build quality.

As a novice, buying my 1st ever stove, I'm going to take his advice I think...

Well, the other makes are well known, some having been round a very long time indeed. I've never had a problem with Stovax or Vermont either, but I haven't had a steel stove (apart from anything else I'm not keen on the way they look). Odd about the doors then - why I wonder?

In fact I spotted a couple of antique Jotul stoves this week while on holiday and was very tempted as they were so decorative!

Has he suggested what to line the chimney with?

Yeah, he said he's going to use 316, backfilled with vermiculite.

He didn't really say much more about the exact problems with Aarrows, they just seem more trouble than the rest...

I'd not touch anything you can't readily get parts for! Firebars can burn out etc.

are there any general regular maintenance things to be done on a stove? (except for chimney sweeping, obviously)

Depends really on the stove - the rope around doors may need replacing eventually, seals around joints replacing (with stuff from a tube), recoating to keep black if you wish, that sort of thing, but in general not a lot, in my experience.

Grates can burn through, though, especially on multifuel stoves, and I suspect lined stoves will eventually require some attention to the lining. Glass doors can crack.

Well, the engineer finally got in touch: £870 for everything from the top of the stove upwards (stove pipe, register plate, flue liner, vermiculite insulation, clamps, jackdaw covers etc.)

And have decided on a Hunter Hawk, either 3 or 4 kw, about to decide which by measuring up. Best price is £360 for the 3kw, and £380 for the 4kw from Harridge Stoves (as mentioned by Mark earlier in the thread.)
