if you had some money burning a hole in your pocket and you wanted to buy a nice old house/project where would you look?

Is it to live in, or for investment? Do you have any 'boxes' that need to be ticked, ie - size, garden, location, road/rail connections? What's the budget?

its to live in, settle down and start a family (one day ) , pretty much able to live anywhere , must be old (the older the better) , into beams and big fireplaces so timber framed would be nice. dont mind something that needs work and i can spend 150k before i have to think about borrowing. must also be rural and detached would be good. garden and off street parking is also a must. am i being fussy? i warm to pink easily.

Somerset or Lincolnshire would be my choice, but I reckon Wales must have some amazing places too. The North is too cold for me, the South too expensive. And lots of places in the middle have too many roads.

But as I said before, it's all a question of what you can turn a blind eye to, perfection does not exist.

thankyou , i do hope you have better luck than i have. i did live in wales for a bit and my other half was born there , lovely place to go for a long week end but i dont think i would want to move there to live again. we have been looking everywhere though except as far north as yorkshire but i also used to live up there as well way back when i was younger and i didnt really mind it up there , at least it snows there in the winter time.

The detached bit of your requirements makes your search almot impossible!

The village of Nether Stowey is gorgeous, and in a glorious part of the country.

This 2 bed cottage is in the village itself, is on Rightmoves, and is called Lime St, Nether Stowey, Somerset, and is marketed by Jane & Partners. I don't think it offers you the masochistic amount of work you want though.

Yes, it was the butcher's place that caught my eye.

Honestly Rob, detached for around 100k, it scarcely exists. Detached is great though,especially when combined with isolation, power tools at midnight, nude gardening, music as loud as you want...get a mortgage, it'll be worth it in the end.

we can go another 45 ontop of that 100k but yes , detached is necessary for the very reasons you describe. detached and private would be better.
whats put me off semi's or terraced houses is the house i am in. its really small and every room in the house is up against next doors house.
down stairs isnt too bad but upstairs , due to the houses construction , there is nothing more than a stud wall between us and next door.
when our land lord renovated the cottages (they own both and one was gutted in a fire) they didnt put any sort of sound proofing between the two cottages and as a result we can even hear next door snoring at night. i do like my privacy and tip toeing around someone living 6 inches away is too much for me.

I take your point, but it sounds like you've been particularly unlucky: it needn't be like that. Having said that there's no way I could put up with neighbours again, or they have to put up with me! You're doing exactly the same search we did last year, except you're much braver with work expectations.

I think you're going to need a mortgage or to live in the back of beyond. The beautiful, frozen North. I haven't looked there yet.

Timber framed... pink... rural...

I'd be thinking East Anglia if I were you. North Suffolk is delightfully uncrowded and unspoilt, with plenty of period properties. I suggest you register a search specification with Rightmove and Primelocation covering the area north of, perhaps, Sudbury and up to... well, as far into Norfolk as you care to go. However, the further north you go in Norfolk, the more you're likely to see timber framing giving way to flintwork.

I understand that Babergh District - HQ in Hadleigh, Suffolk - has the highest proportion of listed buildings to non-listed in the country. And yes, I fully expect that statement to be hotly contested!
