Rob - it's a bit difficult to see the design on the end of that metal wossname, but I wonder whether it could have been a seal. I don't mean the "oink, oink, toss us a ball" kind, but the kind that you pressed into wax to seal a document.
Sorry to disappoint you, but copper is not a semi-precious metal. Mind you, at the rate the new economies are using the stuff, it soon may be.

Can see what you mean about being a seal Penners, but the decoration seems more ornate on the rest of it than the end you would use to seal, which I would have thought unlikely?
Are there any holes, or parts where something like a pin could have broken off or thread gone through Rob?

Could it be the base of a Celtic Cross I wonder. It doesn't appear to 'fit the hand' comfortably enough to be used as a seal and the chevrons are slightly naive to be used on such a high quality artifact. A pendant maybe worn either around the neck on a strap or chain or perhaps even dangling from a belt around the waist?
Either way, find the rest of it Rob and you could end up like Del and Rodney, 'millyunairs'... :lol:

Just tried googling them to see if anything similar but can't find anything, does they have a name other than a seal or wax seal stamp does anybody know?

At first I thought it may be the bottom of a cross, the seal is an interesting idea however the design on the base, the startburst shaped lines look more like where the metal has been folded or at least I thought so. The residue in the middle looks like iron, its rusted. So I thought another metal was forged/shaped around iron for some reason. I wonder if it was a pilgrim badge?

Yes Rob, the base looks to me as though there was something attached to it. Not sure if it's a pilgrims token although I'm not saying it isn't but I have a couple of lead Canterbury Tokens one of which I was asked to replicate the one side and on the reverse engrave some pertinent lettering as they were to be given away to people who attended the European Lead Battery Conference 1990 (or thereabouts) as a memento of the occasion. About 450 were required. Now I've got to go and find one to take a picture of it... The following year I made some St Michael medallions as well. By all accounts he's the patron saint of plumbers apparently.
That reminds me that I made some downspouts for the cathedral as well.
It's amazing to me how being a member of PPUK has brought back so many memories to me. Please say if you're fed up with me yet as I seem to posting stuff all the time. I'm sure I'll run out of things soon.

Well I for one am enjoying your contributions Doug (although I am stuck in bed and have also managed to find daytime TV interesting this week so perhaps I'm not the best judge)
Sound feasible to me Rob. Especially as you are quite close to Bury so I would imagine there was quite a big medieval tourist trade around those parts

Nice one Milady. I missed that! The tools are for turnips and mangles and other root crops for topping and tailing them as they were pulled from the ground. I still have a scar on my left hand fore finger where I sliced a flap of skin open and because of the freezing conditions at the time didn't know I done it. :shock:
The ones with hooks on the ends are for pulling the turnips,swedes or mangles etc from the clamp or stack when feeding them to the stock. In those days we used to pile up the root crops and after covering them with straw pile earth over it to protect them from the frost so you were all right with some of your suggestions but not right enough.
