You could try uploading your images to putfile
http://www.putfile.com/
You can then copy a link to the image into your post.
However, please try this out in the test forum first!!!
You have to register for putfile, but is is free. After you upload an image to putfile, a list of links are displayed next to the image: URL, BB and HTML. Press the copy button alongside BB and paste the copied link text directly into your post on the forum, as I've just done.

Does the family keep you locked in the cellar, Ian?
Here are the witchmarks: 
Interestingly, this joist may be older than the house - it looks like its hand cut rather than sawn - you can see the uneven facets left by an adze?. See the way that the witchmark has been cut through on the top. There are other witchmarks on other joists - just none so good as this.

Actually, this practice continues into the enlightened 21st century in this country area - we've rebuilt two fireplaces in different houses and have put a pair of old shoes inside on both occasions - with Northamptonshire being the boot and shoe capital of the country it seems appropriate![/quote]

Good to hear that the tradition is being kept alive.
As to Witch marks, we have to be careful not to confuse them with more mundane things.
I like to 'sign' my work, and leave my name or initials on all sorts of things: behing skirting boards, in hidden areas of plaster and so on.
Some of these marks will be to help carpenters assemble the joints. You might build a structure at ground level first, then take it to bits so you can install it in its proper position. You'd mark the joints to assist with correct re-assembly.
And you'd want to use your own mark if you are getting paid by the piece. A stone mason would mark the blocks that he'd dressed etc.
Whatever these mark are, I like them. A man made those marks centuries ago, and perhaps you are the first person to see them again since that part of the building was completed.

I wondered about that at first, Moo. However, if you look carefully you'll see that the brick structure is slightly convex, so I think it's the good old arch principle at work.

Old buildings don't usually suddenly go from structurally sound to collapse - it's a slow creep to the tipping point!!!!
Having said that, I saw a sad pic of a collapsed thatched cottage once- the new owner had gutted it, removing internal walls as is the fashion. It was OK for a few weeks, then CRASH!!!!
