What thickness cement render?

You may remember this wall:

After all the comments about bare stone, we have decided to render it in cement. As you lot are experts on this, what thickness render should I do? Also, is 2:1 building sand to cement about right and should I put some waterproofing agent in? I was also wondering if a bitumen layer first might be a good idea?

The outside of the wall also needs doing as well so I was thinking of a cement render with a pebble dash finish to make it look modern. Any thoughts?

Glad you've come to your senses Colin. Don't forget to prime it with diluted PVA first, inside and out - just to make sure your render sticks well.

When you've finished the job, I'd use a "belt and braces" approach and cover the whole lot inside and out with silicone waterproofing compound.

You have already put a chemical injection DPC at the base of that wall I assume?

For god's sake don't use cement!!! Use 1:3 lime/sand, NHL 3.5

Cement destroys stone.

Actually, have you considered some beams for that room? You can get plastic ones you know, no need to lift heavy timber.

Some good ideas there to seal up the wall, but it would be a shame to completely lose its character.

If you want a proper modern look then you can't beat MDF routed out to look like tongue and groove - it's beautiful

On second thoughts, I wouldn't pebble dash the outside. Smooth render it in cement - if you ever get fed up of it and want the stone look back, rather than having to hack the pebble dash back you can just stone clad it straight onto the smooth render.
