what paint and where for sash windows?

Plenty of helpful posts on renovating sash windows, and I've draught-proofed a couple quite successfully with the diy kit. Totally recommend it, and any excuse to buy a new power tool (router) is ok by me.

But when it comes to repainting, what sort of paint should I be using? different inside/outside, to be weatherproof? and have people painted bits of beading which are inaccessible after installation, beforehand?

They are 'white', but heard that 'off white' is preferable. (1899 semi with bays) Oh and don't want to go down the linseed paint route, there is a limit to my enthusiasm.

If it is bare wood I would take a serious look at OSMO.
I think that the colours are called 'Country Colour'. We stopped using 'paint' years ago - this stuff is just so much better. Mike

If you are starting with bare wood why the objection to linssed oil paint? It just happens to be better than the rest.

Old Dutch saying - "The dearest paint is cheap paint."

Interesting link Biff. I must try this stuff sometime. On the suject of cost - I wince every time I buy OS but the coverage is phenomenal and it really works so the price of a tin is almost irrelevant. Mike.

It's weird how a little of the Alback linseed oil paint that Holkham sell seems to go a long way. And if you don't have to put another coat on for fourteen years then £25 per litre ends up pretty cheap. Being more vapour permeable than alkyd paints the wood stays dry, and the paint doesn't peel off. There are no VOCs, and it's not dependant on the petroleum industry. The binder, linseed oil, is a renewable resource.
The downside, in common with most paint, is that the main pigment is titanium dioxide. This will soon be comming from a harge hole in the ground in Madagascar, currently home to an invaluable tropical forest. But of course painting the rich world white is more important than an ecosystem we're unlikely to visit so won't miss when it's gone.

The only downside to linseed I've heard is that it takes a long time to dry and needs good conditions (i.e. not bucketing down with rain) while it does so.

From what I've read, the priming of the timber is most important, and if the linseed oil can soak well into the wood it makes for excellent protection.

Would the wood need to be quite dry prior to priming Biff? I'd would think new unpainted timber would be an excellent candidate for linseed, but stripping paint of really old windows would perhaps be rather difficult.

The wood is painted (white). I'm happy to sand down, but to strip all the paint and start from scratch, then use linsed paint would mean many days without windows.

I thought I had seen some reference to microporous (?) paint which helped the wood breathe, but can't track it down now that I need it...
