What order must works be done in?

Yeah, it's the re-wiring that's making me think there's no point trying to make any of it pretty inside just yet. But we could manage "basically habitable", I think. That just means doing the re-pointing in one room, and putting up breathable board where necessary. I can live with bare walls and no carpet. (We're staying with a friend at the moment, but that can't continue for much longer.)

I'm buying guttering tomorrow. And someone gave us some scaffolding last weekend, so we'll be able to get started on fixing that straightaway.

We've done most of the major work, I made a list today (whilst i was at work waiting for something to finish) of jobs that need doing just to decorate the entrance I was surprised how many items were on the list, its getting them in the right order that counts - made me realise we haven't even thought about the new front door.

And I hope you took in Moo's comment above about Mr Murphy's influence on your electric socket planning. It's true, you know. No matter how carefully you think through the layout of every detail of every room, there will still always be a socket behind the sofa and under the bed.

And in the kitchen you'll always need twice as many sockets as you think.

We went to the extreme of walking different routes (eg. going to bed at night)...so that we would know which lights we would want off/on and where the switches should be.

It also makes sense to consider media/PC...if you don't have a huge budget, it is possible to buy very affordable distribution panels (50-60 quid) which will take radio/tv/satellite/LAN and distribute around the house.

In terms of cost....we also had all of our electrical works fitted with the cheapest possible switches/sockets and plain plastic pendant fittings. Then, as we have decorated each room in turn, we have been able to 'upgrade' as we wanted.

Penners is spot on with the socket comment. As well as numbers, in larger rooms it pays to consider location of socket...we simply put at least one socket on every wall to allow for rearranging of furniture in future.

Oh....and it rarely makes any sense to fit a single socket. The marginal costs of a double socket are insignificant
