I work with many Americans who try so very hard to perfect the English chap image....but they fail to understand that by 'trying' they have already failed.

He was, I believe a self-taught architect. Looks as though he was sel;f-taught sartorially, too (to rather less effect).

Is that a certain Mr F L Wright with him in the top picture? I believe he loved Portmeirion.

Not entirely self taught (he did three years Maths at Cambridge, then six months at the Architectural Association - Lutyens later said "Six months? I was through with it all in six weeks!"). Sure evidence of how badly built everything between 1900 and 1930 must have been...

What kind of house whould a chap live in I wonder, especially one of middling income? What is the built equivalent of the well-pressed trouser or a three piece tweed suit? I feel sure it would be a period property. Something mock Tudor with a perfectly manicured lawn and well clipped privet perhaps?

Good lord. It's the lime green mermaid outfit in the top picture that's the scariest I reckon.

Except that mermaids were supposed to be attractive and beguiling I thought, not as rough as old boots.
