I'm lying in my hotel room in Rome just now, quaking that "they" might catch up with me for those fares, and I'll be on the next rendition flight to an orange jump suit in Guantanamo... :shock:

In my defence, the fine was about ten times the fare and the chances of being caught were about one in thirty or less. Sometimes presenting an unvalidated ticket and speaking English like a helpless tourist would even avoid the fine. 8)

Which bit of "it's for the court to determine the facts, not you, me or the Ecuadorian dry stone walling association" do you have the most trouble understanding?

We gave up trial by ordeal, public haranguing or divining the guts of dead animals, over seven hundred years ago. We use due process now. It may be slow, but we havent found a better way. It seems to be successful enough for much of the rest of the civilised world to have followed suit.

I have no prejudice here. Unless wishing to see the judgement of our courts upheld not undermined by stunts, is a prejudice.

Courts don't always get it right. Take the recent case of Tomlinson for example. One court concluded unlawful killing, another court concluded no manslaughter. One or other court was not right. Legal history abounds with miscarriages of justice, often politically motivated.

As we all know, Assange did not refuse to be questioned in Sweden but then prosecutor concluded there was no case to answer. He has not refused to be questioned in England.

I raised the matter of global warming because I find it interesting that there is a correlation between people who do not support or accept Assange, Wikileaks, windfarms, peak oil, and global warming. There really should be no connection.

You may be confusing 'denial' with 'giving a damn'.

As for the the legal system sometimes making mistakes, that's clearly true but it also works both ways. I'd guess that more guilty people are let off than innocent people found guilty. But if we are to avoid lynch mobs baying for guilt or innocence then we only have the due process of law and order to rely on. Isn't it a bit like democracy - not perfect but the best option?

I don't know if Assange is guilty or innocent and frankly anything short of a proper test of all the evidence in a court of law is just opinion or prejudice. Trial by media is always unedifying and this whole affair seems to be no exception, but it does seem a tad hypocritical that Assange's supporters wish to see the US government face the legal consequences of its actions while simultaneously trying to prevent Assange himself facing the legal consequences of his own.

There's a difference of scale. The USA is accused of war crimes, the deliberate killing of unarmed civilians, over and over again, and the collateral murder of 100 000 or more civilians. Assange has not been accused of anything criminal by the alleged victim. The accusations now being bandied about came later from the authorities when Wikileaks took action. His 'crime' was to expose the USA's lies.
