It's OK Mr P, the Georgians did anticipate that need and we have extensive vaults for the purpose! Such essentials have to be stored as close to the house as possible, you just never know when there will be an emergency that requires their use.

Flippin' heck your basement thingy is tidy LadyArowana! Please let me send you some spiders, that slightly suspicious mixture of "stuff" that always gathers in the corners and general clutter - we have plenty to spare!

We had two glorious days of wall to wall blue sky on this side of the Atlantic also, after a week of unusually wet weather - This was perfect timing as a bunch of mothers had decided that we would make a "sensory garden" with the infants at the local school. We had 160 3-6 year olds gardening the lovely soft soil like there was no tomorrow and we did green activities with them when it wasn't their turn plant. (I ran the leaf rubbing station, and it was completely awesome to watch their faces when the leaf shape "magically" appeared on the paper - the little ones are so cute!) There are hundreds of bulbs (and some perennials) tucked away until spring, and any ideas I might have had about being an infants teacher have evaporated. :shock: Infant teachers need double-halos!!!
I miss the swallows! I had forgotten how they gather and chatter until they are ready to leave. Our little birds seem to have gone but I still haven't seen any of the huge flocks of geese come through. Like the swallows they must be about two weeks late now also - the downtown hi-rises power-down their lighting for the migration from 22 sept to 21 Oct. so they better get a move on.

Gotta finish repainting the most urgent peeling window frames this weekend though. The joy of old houses without "proper" plastic windows!

I have to agree!! I have 3 garages and a double car port and only one space is taken up with a car And that's only because some tw@t prised the door top to try and break in so, if it rains heavily, it leaks :evil: :evil: All the other cars live in the yard :lol:

Well, beggin' yer pardon, Milady, but them there vaults don't look like any workshop/storage area that I've ever encountered. Where are all the tools, the old offcuts of timber that you can't bear to throw away, the lengths of 2.5mm cable that are too short for any imaginable job but might come in handy one day, the box containing three remaining yellow tiles and a broken blue one, the hardened paint brushes, the box of bolts that you haven't got any nuts for, the washing machine motor that you must be able to use for something......?

My notebook tells me that the plastic box in the photo should contain:-

Spare V & B tiles for master bathroom
Parts for shower and toilet
Sash cord
Old picture hooks
2 types of curtain hooks
Spare bathroom tiles
old 2 gang brass rope edge dimmer( ex dining room )
Wall plugs
Brass wood screws
Plastic screw covers
Washing machine transit bolts
Paintbrushes

and the leftover bits of skirting and Corian are propped up here



I have some tools and an old electric airpump in London, and my bench is with me in Singapore along with a few other plastic boxes of "useful stuff". Broken things get thrown away though, and I regularly cull leads and other electrical devices that have been upgraded, is this a bad policy and in contravention of SPAB guidelines ?

SPAB can mind their own business. Neat and tidy "workshop" environments, with a tiny quantity of well-organised bits and pieces stored neatly in plastic bins are completely against nature.

Call me old fashioned, but I do actually like my workshop to have space to actually work in. Although that pic does have a number of similarities to my 'shop :shock:

My workshop can be no more than 9 ft by 4 ft but things can get lost in it for years. I knew I had a spare brass brass door handle somewhere which I needed to replace a dodgy one in my bedroom but all searches were in vain. It turned up yesterday in the box where I keep my dry pigments and rabbit skin glue, which I had got out for one of my current decorating projects.

My better half was banned from my last garage as all she ever did was to stand at the door and throw rubbish in, so that I couldn't even enter... Our current garage (at our rented place) is so full of unpacked boxes that she doesn't even try now! At least then if I forget where something is, I know it's my fault (and it is happening more these days)

:roll: obviously so I can answer Mr P's questions about the contents of my vault, without having to fly all the way to the UK and open the box. You clearly have a real treasure in Mrs FW, she must be telepathic and dedicated to serving your every need. By moving the things you are going to want she ensures that all you have to do is ask her for them rather than spend ages hunting around the workshop. Show a little gratitude :lol:
