The builder started with watered down lime mortar and my husband said it looked like someone had been sick over the wall. In the Old House Book Marianne Suhr says add pea shingle. We tried that but it looked a bit peddledashy. In my view peddledash is something invented in about 1950 and is very even and presumably applied by a machine. We trotted round the village and looked at other cottages, found a wall where we liked the finish and the builder copied that. So we ended up with a mix of size of stones - some up to quite big (which is a technical term when I haven't a clue how big they actually were although I could ask him if anyone is interested). He then flicked it on with a harling trowel and, yes, lots of it fell off and lies in a pile at the bottom of the wall. The end effect is lumpy, bumpy, uneven, slumpy in places but we love it and it's been much admired by neighbours who all enjoyed watching the process. I'll do some pics at the weekend.

I have had a go a photographing the new roughcast but I have discovered pictures of roughcast are very boring. But for those that are interested here's a couple showing where the rough cast bit (extension built in 1980s) joins the old random rubble stone walls, and then a close up of the rough cast. I noticed at the weekend that there are some patches where the lime wash is patchy. My guess is that in places they have missed bits. I will have to talk to the builder about this today. I will be glad to see the back of the scaffolding when eventually it goes.

While that is quite possible (painting white on white on a sunny day is tricky!) it could also be down to what was undeneath, it can take a couple of coats before limewash appears completely even.vicky whitworth said:
