There was a nine somewhere in the area that was sunk between 1884 and 1887, but the well is almost certainly older than this...

On old plans the well is marked as a pump. The house behind has a well marked in different locations in different years map AND in one case a spring (marked at the location of the steps into the hole in the ground...)

I never knew wells were thought so highly of. We have one oin our garden, which is currently covered with a giant circular saw blade, it keeps the kids from messing with it!!!!!

I'll have to investigate it this summer.

I rang up the people who did our mining searches and asked about the local pit... it seems it is older than the internet hit I found suggested. The mine head was just up the road (about 150yards away), but they have no record at all of where the workings extended to...

I think I may have to go and buy a pump I can lower down and then reduce the level slightly so I can lower a camera and a torch to have a gander....

I doubt that a pump would lower the water level sufficiently to see any more details, especially not if that pipe (9"?) is the original suction pipe. The water would probably come in faster than any sensible pump could shift it. I think it's probably a drainage system for mine workings and there could be a lot of water involved.

I think I'd try to lash something up with a cheap web-cam (£12 ish) in something like a Kilner jar with a cable gland in the lid. I don't know if there's any limit on the cable lengths. Maybe fabricate something from drainage fittings and Makrolon or perspex if you want a good quality image. An underwater light can't be hard to find. I think all you'll see if a muddy hole with a stone wall.

The pipe is more like 12-14" But I dont think it can be associated with the original pump since it runs horizontally and has no obvious connections etc (unless these are underneath it).
