I think some of the question was about what would have been appropriate?

It would be useful to know what sort of opening is already there - hence the suggestion re a picture.

Windows are an important part of a house, and if what you want is an accurate reconstruction then look around and see what may remain.

The alternative is a modern but sympathetic replacement. Both approaches can be valid, it depends on the context.


The problem is, as I said earlier, if you want a faithful reconstruction, it's difficult within the current framework of buildings regs. Thin period glazing bars and DG do not happily mix.

Hi Pieman

Is there a local history group or section in your local library? They may have a photographic archive of the local area. Where I am we have the Cambridgeshire collection which is an amazing resource compiled largely of donated family and professional photos, I was very luck to find a photo of my cottage and village in 1900.

silas beat me to it.. was about to say the same, I found some gorgeous pics of my square (tho not my cottage in the local library, the libararians are normally very help[ful with this kind of thing too :O) ) who also made very good copies of them for me at a small cost, if you find that you can just take em along to biff or whoever and get exactly what you require..

Is there a house or two around that have an original sash left? If so why not knock on the door and ask if you can take some details and measurements. I find doing a well detailed drawing to scale can help to understand a feature and become familiar with how its put together.
