Victorian Houses.

Myself and my partner have just bought a house built in 1877. The windows were replaced some years ago with some hideous aluminium framed double glazed units. We would like to replace them with units that are in keeping with the original style windows.

Could anyone point me in the right direction to establish the right style we should be putting back. Any any companies/ craftsmen that you have used for a similar task.

Actually, it's most likely that the windows were painted sash, not oak, and unless the house is listed you may have to have double glazing, which is dreadfully ugly in sash windows, meaning you have to have thick glazing bars.

Probably true about being painted sashes - if you do replace them with new sashes take great care in finding the right joiner to make them - I have recently seen some terribly badly made replacement wood sash windows in a conservation area.

On the note of having to have double glazing - as they are now supposed to be assessing the house as a whole - rather than the u-values of individual windows - how much other energy saving work do you practically need to do to get away with single glazing?

I agree - which I gave.

1877 - in all probablity single glazed two over two sashes. That doesn't mean that's what needs to be putback, but that is in all probability what was there. A possibility that they were casements though.

Have a look around for a decent book on the subject. When I was looking for some guidance on similar things like plasterwork and fireplaces for my place I found it hard to locate info on the web (and I'm no google nub), I did come across a wealth of books on Victorian houses though.

The Victorian Society has publications, and there's a wealth of info on the www. about windows. Much of it in the advice from local authorities. I have posted links in the past.

However, the best thing is to try to see if there is anything locally which can be used as a guide, although I admit that most now, sadly, have been ripped out and replaced with uPVC. All that history into landfill.

The real problem, as I said earlier, is now getting windows without DG, as that does mean thicker and in my view ugly glazing bars.
