I was able to remove the very heavy stone shelf of the fireplace myself, which was stuck on with a ¼" layer of white plaster (possibly Plaster of Paris). This exposed two metal loops near either end of the flat arch section. How far do the two notches in the stone extends vertically?

I have chipped off some of the white paint on the stone to reveal green and the original brown paint. In the top photo there is a small shadow at the left side of the chimney breast, which is deceiving as it sticks out by two brick lengths or 19" from the wall with the wallpaper.
As discussed earlier, there would have been a range in the fireplace originally and this has been replaced by a cast-iron insert. Is there any way this could have been inserted without dismantling the stone surround?
I don't know what the black painted section is made out of, yet. It's flush with the brickwork but it doesn't seem to be brick and it's not iron. I intend to relocate the surround and insert into the sitting-room (or back parlour), where the insert might have come from.
I will leave the chimney breast projecting 12" from the party wall on the right from floor to ceiling, to match that upstairs (which is quite a bit wider). I have removed 40 bricks since the photos were taken.
The stone surround has a few veins running through it and I'll have to add the missing 3" or so on the right-hand side somehow, as both sides will be visible.

I think the grey pipe is lead and it was used for gas lighting, with the light fitting attached to the wooden block.

Fireplace surround has been removed. I can see the insides of the fireplace and chimney breast from the left-hand side.

The black band above the white painted cast-iron insert is plaster with brick behind, perhaps. This and the raised hearth (with concrete under the red tiles) must have been added some years after the house was built to make the insert fit into a range fireplace that was it was not meant for originally.
The insert here is 30" wide x 38" tall. The one in the front room is 37" wide x 37¾" from hearth tiles (flush with floorboards) to underside of the surround, so I assume actual height is also 38" and there is a ¼" overlap - does that sound reasonable?

I have removed the insert and cleared out all the muck and rubble in the fireplace.

The insert was sitting on one layer of bricks and tiles with two more courses of brickwork and plaster filling the gap at the top. I was able to remove these later alterations without damaging the flush hearth or the quarry tiles.
Projecting 6" from the wall dividing what were formerly the kitchen and scullery is some brickwork at the back of the fireplace that includes two flues so I think the original range had a double oven. The depth of the flues is 3", the same as these special bricks.
The back of the insert, held in position by two metal straps, has several cracks and is in five pieces at least, but is complete. What is its proper name please?

REGD 816243Although they look raised, the letters and numbers are actually concave. The number 13 is stamped on the back, presumably indicating the size. There is a larger version of "THE NOTTINGHAM" exposed in another room and possibly others hidden.
Does anyone else have Nottinghams in his or her house?
