See, I resisted the temptation to use the subject title "Period broadband speed"
Some of you lot are very techie, so I'm sure you can answer this.
Despite being extremely practical, I have no interest at all in how computers work. My elderly desktop has died, to be replaced with a new one next week, and I'd like to evaluate my broadband speed.
I suspect it's pants - as on sites like Youtube, any video link is very jerky and it takes forever to download the full thing. That is about as demanding as my broadband useage gets - we're not into online gaming or anything else that is particularly data hungry. It would be nice to have a faster refresh speed when going onto new website pages, and definitely to have better speeds for watching video or downloading music.
Currently we have the basic BT package - the desktop being plugged directly into the router, and 2 laptops working wirelessly, through a Belkin router. Generally only 1 machine will be on at once, although my kids are getting more into using their laptop now so I guess we'll have more instances of 2 machines working simultaneously. Our old (10 years old) desktop seemed to be faster than this laptop, so I presume the wireless route must be slower.
The "assess your broadband" sites I've seen are full of techno gobbledegook - has anyone a quick, simple idiot's guide explanation of how to test our broadband speed, what is considered a reasnoble speed and what we can do about it if ours is rubbish?
