Ventilation (aka drafts) as a cure for condensation

I'm assuming that this is an old house full of unstoppable draughts anyway. I am saying don't needlessly add to them.

The walls of a largely unheated traditional house will be at an average temperature greater than night time but less than day time. So if you let in damp day-time air it will condense on the walls as it is cooled.
The more you heat the air inside the more moisture it will contain so the more it will condense on the cold(er) walls. The walls will always be colder than the air.

Condensation in a house comes mainly from the moisture produced by the occupants lifestyle. Although warmer air temperatures hold more moisture, the relative humidity is lowered as the temperature rises, which in turn lowers the dew point and the chance of condensation forming. For example the dew point at 16c 70% R/H is 11C, while at 20C 40%R/H it's 6C.
To find out if condensation is likely to form on any of the building's elements a cheap thermometer/hydrometer and a surface thermometer will give you the answer using the chart you can probably find on the net. You do need to take readings at different times of the day.

Yes, it's amazing what they got past Planning in the 60s. However, unfortunately Planning are not now liking any of my ideas of what to do with that ugly front porch.

We could use midgets to paint our place - the captenter's nose is about level with the roof joists here.



Also we upgraded the ventillation to allow a proper through-flow now.
