Exactly right, I can testify they're both useless at keeping your legs warm and a menace on the building site. I don't know how some builders manage to wear them for any length of time.

It’s all about layering. You need thermal tights/ longjohns and long sleeve vest, then a fleecy onesie ( if it’s a footless one then socks and fluffy slippers a must ) topped off with a dressing gown preferably with hood. Pyjamas are an acceptable exchange for a onesie, and do make bathroom visits easier, however they lack the cuteness factor of a onesie in my opinion.

I've managed to order a small wood burner for the snug for delivery hopefully in November. It's a small room, mostly finished and insulated. It should get toasty so I'm planning to move in there. Neighbours have suggested they might like to move in there too in exchange for a regular supply of freshly cooked muffins and tea.

yes, if you substitute a bodysuit for the vest in underpinnings of the lingerie variety, and put a onesie on top of that there’s little likelihood of anything romantic occurring. If you add my favorite habit of wrapping up in a duvet* then the likelihood reduces to zero.

Energy companies have to install smart meters by a certain date and if not will be fined hundreds of millions of pounds, possibly billions.

Hence the constant letters...

Anyone with an envelope and a pencil can work out that our energy production is woefully inadequate and as fission PPs go offline we need to start building new infrastructure ten years ago.

The 2030 pipe dream is amusing. If everyone has heat pumps and drives an EV we will only be able to have the lifhts on every second Wednesday of the month.

So. Why have a discussion and divert billions into building out infrastructure?

Much easier to fit smart meters.

Then companies can charge for apparent power, apply continuously variable tarrifs and generally make poor people freeze in order to keep the system running with less than optimal capacity by pricing out demand.

Diverting taxes to pay for our grand childrens energy security isnt a vote winner.

Making poor people suffer doesnt seem to bother many polititians.

Very interesting to see what happens now the middle classes are actually hurting.

At least we are doing well with renewable energy production.

I dont know, I am just a lowly East End born grunt.

But maybe, we could divert a few more of the billions in tax breaks we give the fossil fuel industry and instead pump that into quickly scalable renewables.

These are the same companies btw, Shell, EON, Energie etc who financed the Nordstream 2 pipeline with Gazprom in 2015, AFTER Russia annexed Crimea.

You paid for that, via tax breaks to the companies who funded Russias largest infrastructure project after they first invaded Ukraine.

LadyA, is that what you wear on the building site?...as you were replying to Lacan07's comment about building site attire....? I heartily approve. Cute onesies should be worn on all building sites, with steel toecapped fluffy slippers.

Yes, except the fluffy slippers. Proper shoes a must with tools and stray objects on the floor, they always knew it was time to start work after early morning coffee when I changed into work shoes

On a more serious note, experimentation today realised that the 5m set of rose gold fairy lights my wife strung from the central beam in our lounge uses 5W and is more than enough to light the entire room when we are just chatting, watching TV etc in the evening, compared to the minimum of 30W usage when we have the wall lights (even with LED bulbs). Small beer but every little counts!

I have a dilemma: I'm looking at possibly getting some acrylic for a window, but at £100 each, I only want to buy one this year. The two bedrooms at the back are both North facing, and about the same size.

Bedroom 1: Single glazed draught proofed sash is a well heated room, as it not only has a number of brick walls (internal or party wall) that seem to store heat, but only has a small amount of exterior brick wall to lose heat. It also gets heat from the woodburner when we light the one in the room directly below. As a result it seems to stay warm quite well in winter.

Bedroom 2: This has two walls that are exterior, and solids brick, so can soon lose heat, and gets hot during a heat wave. However, it does have a double glazed sash with draughtproofing. So the radiator in this room tends to work harder in winter, but the window is more efficient.

I'm thinking about fitting some secondary roller blinds inside of the (already heavy & lined) curtains.
We already have it in some rooms and I think it helps, it also has the advantage of making the room jet black in the summer.

I suspect that the concept will soon have to go up priorities in the to do list.

Whichever one you sleep in? If either are unused and less needing of daylight then “foil bubble wrap” would be more effective than acrylic

Both used by kids.
One has a bunk bed, so I may try to persude them to share the room during winter. Although it will probably lead to a certain amount of friction.
