The comparison would also make it obvious that plastic (PVC whatever) consume far more resources than wood.

I'm not seeing anything obvious about it, and suspect its the other way round. The energy involved in repainting wood several times, I'd be very surprised if pvc manufacture ate anything like that much energy.

Well, what you have in your brown paper bag on the bench in the Park is your business, what I have in mine is my own! ))))))

Someone asked me to get some white spirit for them and I asked to have a tin full for cleaning some brushes with it. These are manky old brushes and I'd been painting scrap bits of wood in use as shelves - DON'T PANIC it was nothing heritage or period or important.

Honest - they were old plywood shelves made from an ex-bookcase from work, made circa 1870's I should think. I sawed it up, made two shelves and fitted them into the little "room" aka cupboard* which had the toilet in before that piece of equipment was moved into the bathroom circa 1980.

The paint was a tin bought circa 1996 and the brushes ditto.

The shelves are to hold a binding machine, laminator, shredder etc.

So linseed oil paint would have been a trifle excessive.
I have a clear conscience ))

* I called this a little room because I saw, on an Estate Agent's web site, a house which had a third "bedroom" measuring 4ft 6ins by 6ft. My Cupboard is 970mms x 970mms so is now called a little room.

It does not have a uPVC window, but I was curious about the primer and paint. I didn't know you could paint placcy windows at all!

Bookcase built c1970 by the University Estates people and salvaged (with permission by me) - it was too so had to go, but anything useable was saved.

Ply wood? well laminated timber anyway ...... Ouseburn and Willington Viaducts were built with laminated timber arches in 1830s but replaced with iron to exactly the same design later.

The German Gymnasium is a very good example of a building with a laminated timber roof - although laminate in fact dates back much further.

First suggested by Philibert de L'Orme c 1519-70) in his earliest published work Nouvelles inventions pour bien basir 1561.

Ealy laminate consisted of short curved segments pegged together side by side to form long structural ribs.

There was a great revival of the technique in the 19th century, and the Greens were certainly influential, after Ouseburn bridge. Much experimentation went on in France.

I did a fair bit of research about laminate for Smithfield (and still rewriting yet again for the Public Inquiry!).

Two types - horizontal and vertical. Horizontal was the most used in the 19th century.


Cubitt's original roof at King's Cross was laminate 1851-2.

The German Gymnasiusm is actually dated 1866 - was under threat of demolition but then got listed and now all beautifully repaired and re-used.

Roof of the transept of the Crystal Palace was vertically laminated, as were a number of others, although the technique used was much more simple than 16th and 17th c techniques, which were quite intricate.

Just as a matter of interest, in Germany a gymnasium is not what we think of... a place for exercise. It's the German word for a secondary school (ie: pre-university).
