I don't think the OH's card was cloned though - not at our local filling station, and £12.88 is an odd sum for the second attempt (wasn't fuel...) to steal. It will be interesting, if it ever comes to light, how this is happening...

The VISA thefts - no idea. Apparently there are those who work for firms where you have paid online who will steal your details and sell them. That's what the bank said...

Well, only if you never bother to read your card statement (or online summary) and check for fraudlent transactions in the first place.
The direct debit is only taken at least two weeks after the monthly statement.

That's a good point, FF. I always pay for my petrol with my debit card, and given that petrol stations seem to be very high on the list of "at risk" establishments, perhaps I'm being stupid.

I'm not sure about a £100 limit. Could vary from card to card perhaps?

I don't see any merit in using a debit card that extracts my money almost immediately when I can use a credit card that doesn't need to be paid for up to 6 weeks and gives me 1% back on everything I spend with it.

Sometimes a CC incurs an additional charge, in which case I do use my debitcard, but it's pretty rare (car tax online being my most recent experience). On the whole, there seems very little to commend a debitcard over a credit card - assuming a modicum of self-control on expenditure (or a bottomless bank account!).

I also recall reading that CCs include insurance for any item over £100. So, if you drop that priceless Ming vase while loading it into the car you should be covered - but, again, that might be variable between cards.

Regarding the spud-faced nipper's wedding, it was heartening to read that they followed the royal family's lead of selling the photo rights to Hello magazine when so many young people spurn the establishment role-model (though disheartening, perhaps, to read that the Rooney's commanded £1.5m while the Royal's managed only 1/3rd of that - the price of being only minor royalty, I suppose).

Yes - and at least one of the budget airlines will charge you for using a credit card.

I have a friend who works in bank fraud detection and she recommends only using CC for on-line purchases, due to the amount of extra cover you get in case of problems. She never uses DC on-line.

I had my card scammed somewhere, either on-line at B'ham int car parking site or the toll road - which apparently said friend told me is rife - and had no use of my main CC during my recent trip to Ireland as the first day I got there it was refused, phone customer services who told me they'd blocked my card due to someone trying to use it at Napster USA, which is set up for US based cards only. As I hadn't tried to do this they cancelled card immediately and sent new one home!!

When I had problems with my credit card, at the time two lots of computer purchases were made (the first went through, at the second attempt the bank called and asked if this was legit and when I said no blocked it... it was only then I realised the first purchase had been credited to my account...) I also got a call from someone in the US who said his wife had had two debits on her card for things which she had not bought. Traced through Napster to me... no my bank couldn't explain it either.

Well, I wish someone could explain to me how it is my computer is now infected daily with what seems to be adware cookies (which scans say are spyware...) 65 the first time, although that was a few days after my last scan, a few yesterday, and now two today, which I apparently have to remove manually, according to my virus spyware etc company Bullguard.

Today's haul, after a quick scan, are Cookie Bluestreak.com and Cookie DoubleClick.

Yesterday it was HITBOX.com. amongst others.

OK these may be relatively harmless, I don't know, but I would like not to get them!

You could try installing AdAware which helps to block spyware/cookies when visiting sites. Just Google it.

Alternatively if you use Firefox (and who wouldn't? :wink make sure the Adblocker extension is installed.

Ccleaner is a very good bit of freeware that will clean up all the rubbish that accumulates on a hard drive.

Nem - do you run a firewall on your computer?

I also echo Flyfisher's recommendation about Spybot Search & Destroy. It's a very good (free) bit of software, although it doesn't monitor your computer all the time. You have to run it yourself regularly.
