OK, those are interesting pictures.

Can you clarify something for me ?

Looking at the profile of the pocket cut, I can see in picture 12 for example (its a pocket at the edge with a champhered (? sorry dont know the terminology) join at one end and a step at the other), how that might be cut because the profile could be cut from the side.

However in picture 5, which looks like the same thing but with the pocket in a central position, I cannot understand how that cut could physically be made. Unless you have another piece of wood?

Everything is what it is. The cut cannot be made from the side, nor is the central pocket made from more than one piece. the cut is less than 1 /16th of an inch.

I think I have caused you a bit of confusion so I will try to explain further.

If we were to take an 8 light sash as an example. The Georgian period joiner would make this as follows. The top sash rail is a haunched mortice and tenon and pegged (dowel) The meeting rail would be dovetailed and pegged. This sash has some 14 through mortice and tenons. coupled with 2 dovetail joints.

If you tried to force this from side to side the sash frame would remain stable because of the torsional strength.

The early Victorians used the same 14 through mortice and tenons but instead of using dovetails they replaced them with slotted tenons both on the top sash rail and at the meeting rails. Again if this sash was to be forced ffrom side to side it would still remain strong, not because of the slotted tenons but because of the through mortice and tenons of the sash bars.

Mid Victorians with 4 light sash windows 2 above 2 below realised that they could no longer rely on the through mortice and tenons of the earlier period for strength. Enter the Bracket, this allowed for strength to hold the weight of the glass. A slotted tenon (pegged) will not hold a large pane of glass, the dowel would come away and fracture.

Most Georgian windows are not Georgian at all ( have never seen one myself)but early mid Victorian replacements. They do not have brackets, but are slotted pegged tenons. This is easily recognised by the trained eye.

Most people think all sash windows are the same, but if you are educated and know what to look for you can get a better deal.

Well, I've gone all quiet because I've been studying the pocket pictures ! But yes, I'm getting an appreciation of the finer points now. Very impressed with the neat chisel work.

I can see that your method is an improvement over that suggested by Mr Modern McKay; he shows a detail which is somewhere between your cheap cut and the locking type cut. The angled cut is taken in the same plane at both ends, right through, then at the top, a tiny wedge is taken off the pocket 'lid' and glued to the back of the lining to from a v-shape joint.

He also says that the centre pocket shows any damage which might occur when it's removed, whilst a side pocket has the vertical cuts concealed.

Its very unlikely that any modern joiner would go to the lengths that Mr McKay describes, simply because it would take so long. Cutting a traditional pocket would be quicker. the beveled pocket is THE modern method used today.

The centre pocket has to be cut so far through with the pocket chisel. Then the cut does not tear out the sides of the pocket.
