Yes "up north"we used to call them glory holes or coleoles and we didn`t know many glass blowers or "nancy boys"!

One built coal store 
Now I can shovel and store coal somewhere.
Tomorrow I will do the light perhaps three, one at the top and two at the bottom with a lick of bright white paint to whiten it up.

Top a'stairs in Yorkshire, a cubby hole is a cupboard under the stairs, not shelving going down the stairs.
