Under the stairs

Hello all
We have a victorian terrace built in 1903.

What is the name for under the stairs that go down and there is some shelves? I know it's not a callar as its only the stairs?
Any ideas?
Also any ideas on how to light it without putting lighting pendants in there screwed to the wall. Does anyone have any experience with LED strip lights.

Na Seanie's looks like a "cella'ead" or "cellatop" (if you're posh) leading to "bo'um'o'cellasteps" through to his "coiloil".

A "cubbyoil" or "cubby'ole" goes nowhere apart from the depths of your imagination when you've been naughty.

As for the light, if you can't tuck a batten holder out of the way, a bulkhead will take the knocks from the in transit step ladders etc.

Beat me to it with the bulkhead suggestion. Ideal for occasional use in tight spaces where it is likely to get knocked. Not particularly pretty, but does that matter for this application?

I think I will go with the battern things. I wanted a low power simple slim solution but these will be the cheapest which is also good.
I will make a box on the floor at a 45 degree angle to put coal in.

I believe "spence" is the Cornish term. "Cupboard under the stairs" has always sufficed for me

Yeah I think no matter what I try and use it will end up being called "under the stairs"

I'm surprised that nobody else has told you this but Queen Victoria's reign was over by then, so strictly speaking its an Edwardian terrace surely? You were probably given a free pass from because you were thoughtful enough to include a picture :lol:

I vote for "cubby-hole" in answer to the original question. Whatever you do with it I think it will make an excellent expanded man-drawer!
