I don't think there is anything sinister, they are rather disorganised though. They're moving abroad and only appear to have realised a lot of that country's property laws this week. Hence we now won't be completing till mid February at the earliest and could easily be March. Their agent is tearing his hair out.
Judging by the work they did and didn't do to the house I think they're in the 'don't have a clue' camp on a lot of things. On the upside, they have done a lovely garden, and one of the things I like about the house it that it hasn't been overly modernised bar the kitchen/bathrooms.
The church people are all very nice, and given we're about to become their closest neighbours I can't imagine they'd tell me complete porkies.
Interesting about the 1835 laws. Road has been there since at least C12th, so would tick that box. It's in a very good state so shouldn't be any repair bills coming soon and the woman at the council said that they'd be happy to take it over if it is in good shape. We'd all get to choose the name apparently.
