Eight hundred quid per window for secondary glazing sounds a lot to me too. That much would buy a whole new window. Maybe he wants to be stinking rich.

Actually, fitting secondary glazing to a biggish window and making it look halfway good is very difficult no matter how much money you throw at it. It would be interesting to know what your friend would have got for the money.

The window we are due to copy is the one in the second picture, so for the exisiting window we will have three of them together, with the central one opening. Does that make sense?????

I think looking good is starting to come second to a good night's sleep!

He did try a number of places - the prices varied hugely. One of the best (thermal and noise values wise) and not by any means the most expensive (but still very pricey) was Storm.

I've suggested just brick 'em up. But it's a Conservation Area (in Lunnon).

I was beginning to be fairly impressed with the stuff on the Storm Windows site and then I read the page on sound insulation. It is just plain wrong in some important respects (along with some Prof. Plum-like spellings). I'll spell it out later when I've more time.

er, I'm lost. The second picture has a fridge and a microwave and a nice table but I can't see any windows.

It's behind the microwave...

I think I've got a clearer piccie somewhere.... and there is no plastic, it's all aluminium, well 95%, some are still wood, like in the fuel store and funnily enough the newest windows in the utility and pantry extension which are also single glazed!!!!!!

Lots of reading on your site. Interesting you work with Oak, I must contact you to discuss some things we are thinking of doing, maybe you could supply me with some wood.

I'll read and digest, then mail you using the address on your site?

Our idea was to use the single window as a pattern template for making up the other windows, ie replacing the one 3 casement aluminium window, the new window, identical and replacing an old and rotten window on the North face.

Yes........

Nah, my father in law is making some new windows for us. They are going to be wooden, but I wanted Oak, everyone else, SPAB, CO, Wood guys and my father in Law said go for painted softwood, so long as we got a good quality wood, I think it's grade 1 Douglas Fir, from somewhere where it grows slowly so it's vertical tight grained. Then we have Iroku (sp?) as the sill, as we won't have a drip wotsit underneath as it sits directly onto blue bull nose sill bricks.

Which brings us back to the Oak and your site. Not had a look at it yet.

In a nutshell, what do you do?

He makes things in oak - especially rather good windows, which when painted with linseed oil paint will look pretty much like any other wood I'm sure. It certainly should last a long long time.

Better to do the sills in oak even if you do the rest in Douglas Fir. It's British for a start.

Biff - do you want measurements in proper measures or this new fangled metrickery?

I like oak because it looks nice. You can paint the outside to fit in with the neighbours but the wood is durable enough to not need painting.
Douglas fir is a fine choice if they are to be painted all round. Do use linseed oil paint though. It will make all the difference. Look at the Holkham Paints website. And believe them.
I'd suggest that you ask your father in law (sounds a useful guy) to use oak rather than some dodgy bit of possibly illegally felled tropical rain forest that one can't even spell for the cills. Oak is absolutely ideal for cills, durable, traditional, home-grown, sustainable and you'll not notice the difference in price in the grand scheme of things.

Iroko was sold as African Teak in the 60's as it is pretty much as durable, unfortunately nearly impossible to find any from sustainable forests now a days. There are a few countries that allow legal felling but usually with out any replanting.
