A quick two-penneth...
Although there are anomalies, as a rule the concept of exposed stone interior walls is a Victorian conceit. That's how they thought rustic folks once lived, and considered it sligthly romantic when, in fact, it was cobblers.
The reason for plastering all but the most exquisite of stonework in domestic properties was a case of comfort and light. Rarely were there lots of windows and you needed to bounce the light around as much as possible (hence unadulterated white limewash).
I recently had this argument with a neighbour of mine who was taken with the idea of exposed stone in his lounge. Yes, it's beautifully laid, but it's now as dark as a tin mine even when the sun is streaming through the window (singular).
You will, however, be glad to know that I dissuaged he and his builder from plastering the whole interior with cement in the first instance. This I did by threatening six years hard labour in HMP Spab.

I am please to report that Sir John Soane's museum has just recruited a charming new fan and renewed the interest of an old one. Watch this space for more on authentic early 19th century colour schemes!
Does anyone know how to reproduce the mock patinated bronze paintwork? It looked like a fine stipple to me. I fancy this for my hall architraves with Pompeian Red for the walls (and skirtings?) Doors are already done in fake mahogany, but I might paint the panel mouldings black to look like ebony.

Quick post, as not too well, and can't keep up with PPUK for a few days.
Joce - I know you like the look of my place, but to be honest the crazy paving extension really grates every time I come home. As soon as I have the time, I will rake out the c$m$nt pointing and lime point throughout on the old house and then either lime render and limewash just the extension, all of it, or all of it except the porch. Partly this is aesthetic (sorry Gareth, but I do like the look of the stone, it's not listed and it's mine!) and partly this is to further weatherproof it - the side exposed to the prevailing weather is currently cement-rendered and needs to be hacked off (before it falls off) and lime-rendered again.
Internally we have left exposed stone on the inglenook and the chimney in the room behind it - it is such lovely looking warm sandstone. The rest of the walls we have replastered with wobbly haired lime plaster and it looks fab. We considered leaving some exposed, but in reality the rubble looks pretty carp and was never meant to be exposed. You still get loads of lovely texture even when plastered - no right angles and the countours of the walls still show through.

I agree you should lime render the crazy paving extension, but that the main part of the house is lovely as it is. I bet what you've done on the inside is fantastic too, and has tons of character and charm, like its owners.
