Tri Iso - tell me all about it!

Hi everyone

I was just on another thread (bouncy loft floor) and read that the jury's out on Tri-Iso foil insulation.

We are converting 2 loft areas into rooms as part of whole property renovation and building control have insisted on TRi Iso rather than Kingspan - obviously it's a lot thinner which is good where height is important consideration - but as you all know it's a lot more expensive.

What are theories good and bad as am worried now? (please don't get too technical, as am blonde!!)

Really? Are you sure? Have they been bribed? The fountain of knowledge overflowed over at http://www.greenbuildingforum.co.uk/newforum/comments.php?DiscussionID=125&page=3#Item_28 but building control favouring Tri Iso over Kingspan is off the wall.

Biff and others have done experiments ( http://www.biffvernon.freeserve.co.uk/insulation.htm ) which show that tri foil doesn't perform as well as the manufacturiers claim. I disagree with Biff on why it doesn't work but there is nothing wrong with the experiments which clearly show that there is an issue with these products. I can't keep up with the Tri-iso arguments BUT - I can't see that BC can insist on it !

It can insist on suitable insulation to meet regs, but how you achieve that is really not something which they can insist on (unless getting backhanders from the manufacturer...) IMHO...

It was his "professional opinion" (nb he was still breaking in his 1st suit) that it would be the best material for the job - I think he may have crossed the line a bit - I certainly thought that he could only state what needs to be achieved and how we do it is up to us. cocky little upstarts round here though !!

Unfortunately for my diminishing bank balance OH has now bought it and pinned it up (a lot easier to install than the other stuff which he would have had to cut to size :roll: ) - warning bells are sounding - anything that's easy can't be any good right!!

When a building product fails to get the certificate that says it does what it says on the packet then the Buildings Control Officer should not accept that it is doing what it says on the packet.

IIRC there's an ongoing dispute about that, as the BRE's hot box test does not replicate any situation that might occur in a genuine application of the product.

The proof of the pudding is in the eating - we just had it fitted over a large roof and can "feel" the difference already. The oil bills next winter will tell the real truth as we have a before and after experience, but so far I think the doubters are without foundation unless they have fitted it and used it themselves.

I agree with Nemesis. He can insist that your structure complies with the appropriate thermal insulation regulations, but I don't see how he can insist that you use a specific product.

Any insulation is better than none. Some may be better value for money than others.

We need really to know that what we are spending our hard earned on is the bset that can be got for the cash.
