I don't think any of us should give away our towns/villages. (there's a bit more security in a city name) Chris has absolute fits when he thinks about how much I've revealed. It's so easy to think we're chatting amongst friends, but the reality is the Internet is increasingly used for crime.

I'm still trying to track down where Nigel lives so I can shin up the drain pipe with a swag bag :lol:

We've cut down a lot of big trees (20 -50 feet) and there's not a weekend goes by without the chainsaw roaring into life. Chris is fearless

I do hope this doesn't sound alarmist and patronising, but chainsaws should be feared. I used to be involved with forestry machinery development for the Forestry Commission, and I can tell you that they have a saying about chainsaws:

There's no such thing as a slight accident with a chainsaw.

Nobody in the FC is allowed to use a chainsaw until they've been through an intensive training course. And the proper protective clothing is essential:

Helmet with visor and ear-muffs
Gloves
Protective trousers or chaps
Protective boots or gaiters

Please don't let Chris use a chainsaw without these.

Penners, I seem to remember that if you slip with a chainsaw and it goes into your leg, there is a very high risk that the injury will be fatal due to the way that it can go cut so quickly through one of the main arteries - is that correct? Hence the "armoured" trousers that the professionals wear.

I was warned about that on a bushcraft course. And that was just using a sharp knife. I don't go near my chainsaw without my "armoured" trousers, and I'm not a professional but still wear them! Actually they're not armoured, they're full of padding that clogs up the chain.

Perhaps "fearless" was the wrong word, and thanks for your very sensible concern. What I mean is that he is happy to climb 40 feet in the air with a harness and a chainsaw, but he has every bit as much respect for the beast as you do. They are a truly terrifying piece of equipment, and even more so with all the attachments on I think! I never go anywhere near him when he's using it, as I'm so concerned what might happen if he was distracted. Fortunately he's very focused, agile, and has good reflexes.

Yes, absolutely- all of those, full body armour. And a nice safe chainsaw horse for dealing with the logs.

I have to say I am rightly terrified of my chainsaw. I use it properly and with protective gear, but I think fearful respect is a health evolutionary trait.

Absolutely correct. The legs are most vulnerable to a slipped chainsaw, and a slashed femoral artery can cause death with frightening speed.

My point is that "their" is spelt correctly. It's just gramatically the wrong form of "there, they're, their"!

Tsk. I really don't know why I bother. :roll: I don't have to do this you know. Mrs W wishes me to mend her lawnmower today and I really must stop finding more important tasks to prevent me from commencing.

As a person who has had their iliac artery slashed in 3 places, during keyhole surgery in a routine operation, I can attest this. To put me back together again took 9 hours with constant blood transfusion. I'm extremely lucky to be alive, and lost in admiration of people who can stitch veins and arteries together, which is apparently like sewing wet and crumbling toilet tissue. Chris and I don't take these things lightly, he was next door to the operating room when this happened, poor lamb.
