Trees in conservation areas

You're right Flyfisher, few of us have the real freedom to allow a tree to grow into its natural form. But I liked Ivor's advice, as it amounted to a "do-nothing" approach, which we always seem to warm to on here!

Yes, Ivor's post was good advice for low maintenance trees. I also especially liked his point:

It's a shame that so many people seem to regard trees as a problem, rather than an important element of a Period property, in their way just as important as the house.

I just wanted to suggest that if we only choose the low maintenance option (with all its obvious attractions because I know only too well how expensive large tree surgery can be!) then our larger trees would suffer. Better a pruned oak than no oak?

I live in North Somerset and have removed and reduced a load of trees in a Conservation Zone.

I've had no issues but bear in mind it can take some time for a response.... I waited for 6 weeks on some responses.

A tree surgeon who did some work with me advised its always worth adding that the species may or may not be native, if there is a chance its causing structural issues anywhere and whether they provide any 'public amenity'

They apparently also like it, if you are removing a number of trees, if you state what you may replaces some or all of them with if relevant...
