Hey guys - thought id better give an update on this!
Well - lots of hard work later (including sore bum muscles, aching thighs etc!) and 3 hours of contiual sanding and the lines have gone!

I now have this beautiful piece of oak which i gave three coats of bees wax to. It looks fabulous even if i do say so myself! Ill get my camera working so i can upload pics for you soon.

Pity i cant say the rest of the bloody house looks as good as the fireplace - but we are getting there.

ok ok ok in repsonse to my last post - i got sore thighs/bum muscles coz the blasted beam was on teh ground! I had to either:
a) sit on it - which didnt allow me to put any weight behind the sander OR
b) lean over it which did the job!

Now does that clear things up?? or clean??

Yup - pine or softwood of some variety. It's cleaned up well, though.

Babs - just a word about the colour of that lintel of yours. Don't expect it to stay the same colour indefinitely. It will slowly get darker. This is due to oxidisation of the resins in the wood. It's not a fault - it's natural. Most people like the effect, which causes the colour to get redder and richer.

Ill be quite happy for it to get darker. Considering how it looked at the start anything is an improvement. Im so glad i perservered and sanded it - despite contrasting advice on planing it, leaving it or replacing it!!! It took hours of hard slog but it was worth it in the end.
