Travel by train... Hellifield To Carlisle

Hmmmm...

For the benefit of those wishing to do train and stay (as train gets in at 10 pm I think...) how much do you charge B and B?

All rooms are £80 per night ( 2 people sharing) for B&B.
Sunday the 19th we have the Attic Suite, Chapel or Square (all doubles and ensuite) and available on 26th we have the Chapel.

When I enquired I was told the train would be back at 7pm.

Unforunately we felt it too long a day for the dogs to be on a train. Othrwise would have loved to have done it and get to the peel

Shame! Though - train time isn't too long I'm sure. There's time off train - nice park at Carlisle you know...

Thought it was ten - must look again.

Of course with steam it could be any time!

It is leave at noon, 2 hours at Carlisle and back by 7.30pm ish.

Thanks - no idea where I got that time from, maybe another steam rail site.

The first class with lunch seems expensive though - think I might be tempted to take one of my vintage Brexton picnic cases!

Dent - the highest station in England.

Eric Robson's OOT on northern telly featured the station house last night.

It was built with an early form of secondary/double glazing - one complete set of windows inside and another out - as it was in such an exposed spot.

Even so, in winter it was very cold, and the stationmaster would spray the outside with water from a hose and allow it to freeze, giving a layer of external insulation.

Went to Carlisle to see the Dalesman steam in - quite funny really to see the electronic boards detailing that the next train arriving on Platform 4 is the Hellifield to Carlisle, on time at 2.33, which arrived just after the Virgin Pendolino left for Euston at 2.30. No mention of it being steam hauled, and several surprised looking punters who clearly wren't expecting this!

Lots of happy grinning people piling off, good to see it so full.
