Well in the end I paid for the services of a house historian (££££££) who has told me a lot of interesting things. Firstly, that the part of the house we thought was the oldest is actually the newest and vice-versa, and parts of it date back to 1650! I am so pleased, I always thought there was more to my little cott than meets the eye.

Now I'm just waiting for the rest of the report which focusses on documentary evidence which will hopefully corroborate the above.

Ooh how exciting. Do keep us updated as to what you find out.

I'd love to do that but not sure could justify the cost when have so many other things need doing. Maybe one day.

Have been looking for an ancestry type website for building a 'house' family tree, but there doesn't seem to be one out there that is suitable unless anybody knows of one?

There's a nice timeline facility on www.hiddenhousehistory.com, which is handy for plotting the history of your house on, it helped me when going back through the deeds to keep track of when former tenants and owners lived here, and when the building was extended etc, but it's just a site connected to the old BBC programme so I imagine it will just disappear at some point.

Luckily, being in Norfolk we have the fabulous E-map explorer which shows lots of maps centred on your area. It's great being able to view them all online and were very useful for finding out what existed in the 1840s and comparing that with the 1940s for example. Not much had changed at all and you could even see the stooks of corn in the fields if you switch to aerial photo view.
