To strip or not to strip...

I have lost count of the number of hours/days/weeks spent stripping windows, frames, doors etc. There is a faint light at the end of the tunnel in terms of having some rooms completely stripped of all painted woodwork... I can therefore start to look at putting some new paint back on! One of the first jobs is the shutters to stop passers by having a good look in... In the past, I have always tended not to paint hinges and any fittings but I'm not sure what the right approach should be for this house where we are reusing the old hinges and catches. Should I just paint them in the same colour as the surrounding woodwork?

Do admire your persistence. I've never stripped more than a room at a time, and that never completely.

If they are show fittings in brass, leave unpainted of course.
Ditto if paint would clog them up, eg window catches which originally might have had a thin coat of black Jap.
Otherwise, yes just paint them in situ. Deal with any rust as if it were a car.

I am currently painting indoors, with oil.
Oil. Not water. Bliss.

Thanks for your reply. That's pretty much what I planned to do Ivor. Everything looks so much better for having the thick paint removed and the detail restored. A light coat over a few hinges won't be the end of the world...

As for persistence, I'm afraid I have no choice! I can't back out now.

Worth a suggestion not to paint with anything that might need stripping again in the future. I'm overly fussy in this but there is general agreement that modern plastic paints are the last thing you would want to use.

It's a new house and you will be over-enthusiastic. Think forward to 10 years ahead where you will be completely depressed by all the ongoing work and prioritise!
