Graham - it isn't really a simple a matter of aesthetics, or thinking what looks pretty or not, and not up to the OP, it's a matter of preservation or otherwise of what might or might not be regarded as part of the important character of a particular building or group of buildings.

Photoshop won't be able to decide that.

But if the CO says yes you can paint then it is up to the OP whether they think it is going to be aesthetically pleasing or not.
