When will I make an end?

Now, remember what I said to you a long while ago when, to our delight, you first joined this exclusive little gathering. There are lots of ends.

You're not eating the whole elephant at one sitting. You're having one nice little snack, then sitting back and appreciating it. Then you start the next snack... and so on.

It's called "little victories", each one having a "didn't I do well?" moment.

None of our sashes open for that very reason and the temptation to curse is particularly strong on lovely sunny days, like today, when I'd like all windows and doors wide open. But they'll open one day, when I finally get around to that job on the list . . . .

It's very satisfying when you do free them off though. In fact I'd mark sash restoration as one of the most satisfying jobs of all - starting off with a stuck, or at best difficult to open, draughty and rattly sash and finishing with a newly painted window that glides up and down and has no draughts (if you use brush pile parting and staff beads - a brilliant invention).

I don't know if anyone else has found this, but the edges of some of my sliding sashes have been so badly worn I've had to use a router to machine them back to good square edge, then "stitch" in a new piece of wood to restore the square edge of the sash - dowelling & gluing it in place, then machining back to the original profile. I know you can get wider parting and staff beads to cover the wear and fix this more easily, but some of mine were beyond that. The only other solution was to renew the complete sliding sash, which seems a waste (plus loss of original fabric of course).

The improved draught proofing, and the ability to open them was fantastic when I finally got them in. So functional, and they look great.
