apparently the famed Borley Rectory, the most haunted house in the country (at one time supposedly), had a scent of violets amongst the odd going on...

"At one time" is correct. Unfortunately Borley Rectory burned down in 1939.

It was built in the 1860's by a clergyman who had 14 children! No wonder things went bump in the night!

Borley isn't far from us.

My house, built between 1880-84 is your basic two up, two down victorian terrace but according to a friend who is 'sensitive' it has at least a man and a women from two periods who like to drop in. The first time she was staying over, I let her stay in my bed, according to her a women appeared stood next to the bed who she had a 40 min conversation with ! This lady was called Elizabeth, she was Irish and he died in 1742! She was tied to the land and not the house and apparantly she liked to pop into all the houses on the lane to see what was happening. The man (according to friend) does not manifest in person, only in the smell of stale cigarette smoke which we get bubbles of on the stairs and upstairs. I believe this to be the man who bought the house in 1975, was a heavy smoker and died of lung cancer. When he died the house was empty / derelict for at least 3 years before I bought it. The irony is , apart from the smoke, I never see anything ! I spend a my weekends in haunted places either doing medieval reenactment or paranormal investigation but see nothing in my own house! My friends and the other half have seen a woman in the bed rooms , but me? nothing.

You could be destroying evidence that could be used in court if the bodies are modern. Its unlikely, if the building wall bisects the grave cuts then obviously the bodies were there before the building, and depending on the date of the wall are unlikely to be modern. On the other hand you could end up have a really interesting site and dig in your own garden!
