It's that time of year, when we can sit round a fire in the gloom with a glass or three of something alcoholic and tell spooky stories. Sightings and happenings of a supernatutural and paranormal nature may or may not have much to do with how much of the festive spirit is imbibed of course.

Here is a selection of supposedly real life ones from another site, wonder if anyone who posts on PPUK has extra house guests which may or may not be welcome (apart from relatives who won't go home...)?

I am not sure about things going bump in the night but some very strange stuff has happened in out house in the past.

Every time I dig in the garden I unearth children's toys, often quite deep down. My most recent finds include a small plastic tiger and a transparent plastic toy porche containing small multi-coloured balls)

When we stripped the internal doors we discovered marks indicating that that the internal doors have had bolts on the top corners at some point (in a small terranced house this seems to be taking security to the extreme).

Finally, when I first went in the loft I found lots of fishing tackle, big women's brassiers and a pair of clowns shoes.

The mind boggles!

I've never seen anyone - it's more like thinking that you've seen someone pass the window, but when you look there is no-one there. I have always felt very protected and comforted by them. When we excavated in front of the house recently we found 4 skeletons in a row only about 2 feet down. They are right outside my kitchen window. I say hello to them each morning and make a quiet apology when I mow the grass which covers them. Sometimes I wish I knew who they were and why they are there, but mostly I'm glad I don't. They deserve to be left in peace. It's great to realise that in these times when we think we know all the answers, there are still so many things that are beyond our comprehension. Long may it remain so.'

Your placcy toys seem quite benign after that!

I do think, however, that finding four skeletons buried in a shallow grave outside the kitchen window would have aroused my curiosity, and I would have called the police ... which by law I think should happen.

So far, all that's happened in this house is a scent of tobacco smoke which occurs at odd times, always smelt when I'm upstairs and often when alone in the house. So unless the cat has taken to having a swift drag on a Wild Woodbine when I'm not looking, no explanation so far.

Hmmm, maybe this chap is making up the story but if he really has uncovered 4 unmarked shallow graves in his backgarden and just covered them back up I wonder if someone shouldn't inform the police.

I obviously have a tin ear and a glass eye when it comes to the supernatural. I met the woman who used to live in our house, and she very excitedly asked: "Ooh, you'll have seen the ghost then?"
Er, no, not an ectoplasmic sausage, I'm afraid.
I wouldn't mind putting a ghost in this place however - the ghost of her ex-partner, who did so much bodging and b*ggering around with the house, all of which I've had to undo! :evil:

Some dear friends of my parents bought an old house a number of years ago. Their children, who must have been about 7 and 10 at the time always spoke of the old man in a grey long coat and hat standing at the bottom of their beds.
Further research found that an old man had died suddenly in the house.
The whole family also heard the rusty old gate opening and footsteps down the side access, but the parents never saw anything.

Out house has reputedly got a ghost. Apart from the alarm system going off in the room in which she is said to be present we haven't seen anything.
Other farm visitors though have told us of their sightings of an old lady in the barns in the early hours.
My Aunt when she first visited commented that the house felt very welocoming and that she thought that we had a nice resident.

Now this is weird, and I cannot explain it. It's never happened before and if it happens again I will be very spooked! In fact I feel a bit odd now about it.

Last night I was sitting in front of the fire watching a video and eating cheese and pickles (which whiffed a bit...) when I suddenly became aware of a strong floral scent around me - maybe violets. It lasted a few seconds then went.

No explanation at all I can give. The other half was over the other side of the room and couldn't smell anything, and was not keen to get up from his prone position to investigate.


Incidentally, a past owner of this house is buried in the local churchyard under a yew tree. Instead of the usual upright gravestone, she has a huge slab of stone laid flat, bearing only her name and date of death. No, I don't know why that is either...

Well I'm sorry, but the explanation is obvious. However far away Mr C was sitting, he couldn't stand the pong of your cheese & pickles, so he let go a surreptitious puff of the jolly old Glade. And who can blame him?

Actually, I believe that it's not uncommon for the brain to "mis-process" smells (specially for those of us who have just sneaked past the first flush of youth). So what you were smelling was the honk of your supper, cleverly modified by your neurones*.

*Most of mine are now oldrones.

But I could still smell and taste the pickled walnuts... and Birdowswald cheese... before and after ... and ordinarily I have a very keen sense of smell! It just sort of came - and then went. A powdery type of perfume, slightly floral.

Even more spooked now than I was before...

And apparently the famed Borley Rectory, the most haunted house in the country (at one time supposedly), had a scent of violets amongst the odd going on...

It is remarkably easy to have someone buried in the garden - we've done it with both my in-laws!

You only have to inform the local authority, there's no actual need for permission as such. The only regulatory issue is that the Environment Agency must be satisfied that the burial is not within so many metres of a watercourse (30m I seem to recall, but not certain without checking). It is recommended that the graves are marked on the deeds of the property, precisely to avoid the police being called in, but I don't believe it's mandatory.

Indeed, you can have someone buried in your garden and it be legitimate.

However, if were to dig up three bodies in a row just under my kitchen window and was not aware of any burial on the site (and assuming that the bones were not clearly ancient) I would be very tempted to call someone if authority for a second opinion.

Actually in the CL post it is FOUR skeletons... I wonder if any evidence of a coffin etc?
