Ah, well, they have been deleted now....
..not being a prude....
...but it is somewhat embarassing sitting in an open office when when hardcore porn comes up on your screen. I can feel my p45 being prepared as we speak.
It is happen every couple of weeks now.....is there not some way to improve security and stop it?

Having to register doesn't really stop it does it?
They simply register then post.
I know another forum to which I contribute has taken the drastic route of the person in charge actually e-mailing and vetting us all before are allowed to post!

That's about the only way to stop spam posts currently. Most captcha methods have been completely broken by image processing software.

It's a problem facing every forum, particularly when the spammers keep coming up with sophisticated software like this and other 'autosubmitters' which automate the spamming process.
Most other boards overcome the problem by having enough moderators to ensure that an eye can be kept on things, unsuitable posts pulled and that the bona-fides of new registrations are tested.

Don't get me wrong.
I think it would be a great shame if the mods got all ultra cautious as on some other sites. I think people should be allowed to express opinions clearly and in their own style. Some sites even blank out terms like 'bloody' and 'knackered' etc.
However, there has got to be a way to stop the hardcore porn postings.

Quite a number of websites have a fairly simple system for avoiding automatic registration by computers. You register, and then they send you an email that contains a link. Your registration is not valid until you click on that link.
That would work here, wouldn't it?

No. The spammers computers can automate this as well. They generate and use a new email address to register, it doesn't slow them down a bit.
The only real solution is to have somebody moderate posts of new users for say the first week or so. Unfortunately this is hassle for the moderator and slows down the posting for legitimate new users.

I can't see that being possible here. I think PPUK is a very modestly staffed operation.

The answer isn't to click on a link I'm afraid - although I don't like it, the answer isn't to monitor posts as the first post could be the obscene one - it's to have mods actually e-mail people before they can post and verify they are real.
Many Spammers are easy to spot - just look at the registration names. If they can't post until someone 'responsible' has time to look that could help.
Time consuming though.
