Some years back, I bought a 15 tog duvet, I had only used it once before because it was too hot. Since moving into this house it has been on the bed for the last 3 winters.

I have probably said something wrong now and you will all pick on me again.

We haven't done climate change on here for a while... it has a fairly predictable sequence to it; in fact we can probably skip to page 7 immediately (which is the bit where Joce says she doesn't mid if lots of Bangladeshi children she doesn't know drown, because she loves her chickens more... and then we discuss Kath Kidson curtains in the chicken house)

It is funny how retailers fail to take into account where their products are going sometimes, and go for the "one size fits all" approach. Unusual to see that between countries though, as national tastes esp. in clothing vary so much - including sizes. We had some promotional T-Shirts sent to us as a freebie by a Chinese supplier, the XXXL version was still way too small for me!

Jewsons did a fantastic one once when I worked for them long ago- they insisted that every branch have promotional stock of Klargester septic tanks. All very well, but these are big, expensive items and some Jewsons branches are very tight for space - and where I worked, in Fulham, there aren't many houses without mains drainage.....

I guessed they weren't put in by you, from your previous description of your "extension with railway sleeper lintels", if I remember rightly. The trouble with something like those Veluxes is that what is there functions perfectly well, is expensive and a hassle to replace, so I bet it's priority number 9999 in the list of things to do!

When / if you do come to look at replacing them, currently at least the "conservation" veluxes are awful. The ones from the Rooflight Company are much, much better.

Part of the back to school shopping last weekend for my 5 yr old was a snowsuit rated to -25C and boots rated down to -30C. :shock: The kids are sent out to play at lunchtime unless it is below -28C with wind chill, although they get to come in after 20 mins if it is between -20 and -28C - poor blighters! I thought that Norfolk winter winds were cold until I moved to Canada. They spend hours skating outdoors after school though without complaints...

Our house was miserably cold the first few years we lived here, but we put R40 insulation in the loft which was the best $1000 we spent and worked to improve the draft-proofing a bit more every year. At last we feel we are getting somewhere. To improve it much more we need to get new storm windows made to replace the ones that have been lost over the years - being an old house all the sizes are non-standard :roll:
