I'm sorry to advertise a particular company, but my first set of thermals has just arrived from http://www.xcelsius.co.uk I went for ultratherm, which takes you down to -15, but next week I'm having the megatherm for chilled storage workers, which will take me down to -25. I can feel already that these are the first things I should have bought for this period property ( now far chillier indoors than out). The quality of these is a thousand times better than the cheap supermarket version I bought last year. Absolutely marvellous.

Joce, are you sure you'll need -25C undies? You may collapse with heat exhaustion just making a cup of tea.

I use 'ordinary' thermals during the winter, but usually only during the evenings when I tend to be sitting around. If I'm doing any half-physical work during the day then I find an extra tee-shirt and some thicker socks are generally sufficient, together with one of those quilted/padded 'builders shirts'.

Something like this, although I generally buy mine at a local market. Quilted body warmers also work very well.

Thanks for the link to the Barbour gilets - that's on the list. And the padded shirts! Never seen them before, aren't they fab? Want one!

I think I must be much colder than you FF. I remember nights last winter ( ice on the inside of the windows nights) when even with thick pyjamas, the electric blanket 13 tog duvet and thick quilt I couldn't sleep because my face was so cold. I can't believe how cold it is here, and how utterly pointless our 2 k of heating was. We need to do a lot to the house to make it warmer, it's a giant fridge.

Must find some of those nice long sausage dog things for the doors as well. Chris is keen to get all our windows draught proofed, but he has no time for DIY, and we can't really afford it this year.

This is what I love about this disccussion forum, knowing that we are all suffering from cold PP's, makes me feel a lot better.
We have been lighting the log burner for the last 2 weeks here and when we went to Ty Mawr Lime 2 weeks ago they told me that there was frost on the roof of the building opposite.
So if you live in Wales, at 1000 feet above sea level, don't use lime outside after the last week of June.

Baltic?

I dreamt of Baltic temperatures last winter. 750 feet up a N Wales mountain (well, hill really but it is called Hope Mountain) was damned cold. Snow from the week before Christmas to well into March too. The whole valley is like a wind tunnel with horizontal 100mph sleet on a good day.

However, when the blizzard/fog/rain clears it is a fab place, and we are blessed* to live here.

I'm afraid that is exactly the shirt I bought in April and have used all summer! Any time now it will be back to thermals, workshirt, sweatshirt, fleece and padded hi-vis jacket!

Do you know I have a theory that we cold period property dwellers have a tendency to become - shall we say - well-built. It's not our fault. We are forced, against our will, to consume insulating fat by our poor frozen bodies. It is just as well that we wear our fine figures with great gravitas and elegance.

FW - you are forbidden to complain when you have THAT view!

Yes, it is strange how the temperature inside the house has dropped, even though we have had some glorious weather here.
Anybody remember the famous navy blue wollen knickers with a pocket for the handkerchief and the liberty bodice---- that's all we had to keep us warm!!
