Right. So it's all Biff's fault. Now I know who to blame.
As for the price of copper piping, we must be sitting on a small fortune. During the last eleven (ELEVEN!) years that we've been living here, David has carefully stripped out all the old copper piping and replaced it with new stuff (not because he's odd about old plumbing, but the old stuff was all 22mm and leaky and the joints leaked, and so on). We now have a whole attic full of the stuff.
Do you think if I sell it we might be able to afford a week in Skeggie? Or is this really valuable, in which case--Cleethorpes! Be still my beating heart.

It's very valuable, so much so that people break into house and blow them up whilst trying to pinch the copper pipes!!!!

hi..i often take my old scrap copper to the merchants a small car load will get you at least a couple of hundred quid!!have a night out fish n chip supper .lol

(A dollar is not what it used to be but that's still over £4000/tonne. Don't send old cable to landfill - strip off the insulation and collect the metal)

Mrs P and I (plus two young children, two dogs and two guinea pigs) lived in a 30ft caravan for four years while we did our first renovation. Mind you, that was about 30 years ago.MdB said:

We had rat problems too. We used to be woken at night by their gnawing at the floor of the caravan, right under our bed! I eventually solved this by nailing metal lath across the entire underside of the van.
We bought the caravan for £300 (fifth-hand), lived in it for four years, and then sold it for £250. That's cheap rent!
On Saturday, we went to the static caravan shop to see what was available. Wasn't too impressed to be honest though we do have a £10k budget so can get the best of what's available. A lot could easily be improved with a new carpet, curtains etc so that's what we will probably do.
Oh and the caravans get moved around the yard on a fork lift. Imagine what size it is to move a 12' x 38' caravan...

£10k??? Flippin' 'eck! Buck House on wheels?!
We did look at one with two loos in it which did seem a bit ostentatious (and a waste of space). Oh and its not my budget (that's going on the house), the inlaws are buying it with the cavet that they can come down "occasionally" to stay in it over the summer...
Oh and 10k doesn't even get you double glazing in the windows you have to pay 15k for that. (prices are all in including delivery)

£10k with inlaws...oooh dicey choice :shock: i got the caravan in mother in laws garden.. its like being a teenager again.. what do you want for your tea.. what time will you be in etc etc etc .. and too scared to get upto mischief in case she's pasing the door :lol: grrrr
We bought ours from worcestershire caravan sales,,in worcestershire unbelievably.. £2350.. £200 delivery,bit of a squeeze throught the farm gates...3 bed loads of space.. really quite a gem, there were ones with double glazing for about £5K 12' wide by 38' long.. aww bliss. still keep trying I'm sure you'l find what your after, we visited about 5 times to find the one we bought, you have to go in them and take a pew see how it feels.... for about £40k you can get some beauties.. patio doors air con .. still the dogs / cats and rats would destroy it overnight.

We have a Tudor Cobra and it cost us £4000 11 years ago. We've been very happy with it. It was in immaculate condition when we bought it and, in all honesty, it's not much worse now. We've tried really hard to take care of it to enable us to sell it when we're done and get a reasonable price back for it.

The big worry is the planning permission certificate. It could come up saying that it is for a caravan of the current size (7' by 20' I think) which are impossible to get and way too small for us anyway. Should hopefully know this week...
We will certainly look around as we have only seen one dealer so far and I wasn't very happy that we would be getting a good deal though he was a nice bloke. Anybody know good dealers in the SW?

7' x 20' is a touring caravan. Surely your planning permission is for a static? Presumably, you'll get planning for one year with an addition saying you must return the land to its former state when you remove the van but I don't think they'll restrict you on size. The only restriction would be access. Oh, and don't limit yourself to the SW. We live in Lincolnshire but bought our van from Blackpool. Delivery was £200 (OK, I know it would cost more now) but that was only £50 difference than if we'd bought locally.

As it has been there for over 10 years, we should get it automatically which will then allow us to replace it with a new caravan and keep it there permanently. The only question is whether they make a condition of its size.
Maris - It was Keith Cheesewright we visited over the weekend. He had lots of caravans around the 5K price but very few around the 10K price.

Not knowing what you were looking at, but virtually all caravan sites only allow caravans up to 10 years old on site, and 12' wide mainly and at the age at which you buy to have some life left on-site so the more expensive second hand vans will be the most sought after and anything over 8 years old starts to drop off a bit in price.
So the best value vans are often 9/10 years old as people swap them for newer to remain on site.
