Our garden bench is also an effective deterrent against wolves. We've never once had a wolf in the garden.

I've read about lynx being reintroduced to East Anglia (http://www.edp24.co.uk/news/environment/the_lynx_effect_wild_cats_could_be_released_into_thetford_forest_1_3984321) and plans for doing the same with wolves in Scotland, so who knows what's visiting our gardens at night?

Good heavens Doug - they're big. What was it run over by? Centurion tank?
A couple of years ago, driving in France, we had to stop to let a whole wild boar family cross the road - the sow, at least half a dozen piglets (boarlets?) and the boar. Quite a sight!

Our friends who live in southern France had their garden completely wrecked by sangliers (wild boar). They used to water their land generously during the hottest weather, and one night the boars broke through the fence and rooted up most of the lush garden looking for worms.

Our friends now grow a drought-tolerant garden, so the story has a happy (and moral) ending.
