Yes, the Internet has great destructive potential too.

But there is something about these documentaries and the trivialisation that often goes on within them that I find as barbaric as bear baiting or cock fighting. So much TV seems to be set up to make the viewer at home feel smug and superior to what's being filmed. This manipulative flattery secures viewers, but it's so contrived- real life is always far more complex than what appears on screen. Just look at how Simon Thurley and EH were presented recently.

You'd have to have extraordinary dignity and humour to withstand the scrutiny, editing, and conflict-greed of the cameras, plus, as has been pointed out before on this forum, they're hardly going to want to film the likes of me spending 6 months stripping paint in one room or painstakingly coppicing trees. Where's the drama in that?

For me, all such events seem to start with a title sequence and opening music, then finish with a female voice yelling, "You've slept through the whole thing again, haven't you?"

I don't think I've missed much.

Speaking of TV - of course the family Wiggs only look at it for the news and David Attenborough. That and the fantastic experience of Wimbledon in widescreen High Def glory. A shame it is only on for 2 weeks a year - hope the Ashes picture is as good.

They won't mind what size it is, so long as they can say before every ad break "but things were about to go horribly wrong", or "little did they know about the ancient mayan burial ground they were about to discover", or some such smug nugget. We once applied for a film about moving house, based on the hope that they would pay for a posh removal and save us some money (they would, but unfortunately we hadn't sold the house, maybe just as well!) - it was wierd though, they came to film us to 'try us out' - they were lovely actually, but it was very strange opening the front door and seeing a camera shoved into your face. They film so close you wouldn't believe, it takes a lot of getting used to. No wonder its usually only gobby types like me that can get on! Thats the only way I qualify though, I'm afraid I am well educated, am not sleeping with my brother/carrying an aliens baby/using hard core drugs and running a nursery/happy to girl fight on TV and am sadly ordinary. Ho hum, maybe one day I can aim for a Jeremy Kyle DNA special......

You snobby lot, are you seriously telling me you never watch TV?? :wink: I will claim similar snobbiness over my children watching TV - I feel very strongly about the damage that does, but I am happy to 'actively watch' various programmes I choose (as opposed to just sitting and staring - and I will admit they are not ALL educational, though I draw the line at any soaps :x ). Anyway, you must watch it to be able to comment on the programmes like the one that started this stream, ha!! (I will now slink away and watch Come Dine With Me in utter shame....... )

Of course I watch TV sometimes.
However a large proportion passes me by either because I'm doing something else or I don't like what's on.
Freeview offers some choice, usually old re-hashed suits me.
SKY is expensive rubbish.

Many people who appear in the house-type shows (hunting/doing up/building/selling/desperate/mucky/daft) remind me of characters from Harry Enfield. Either that or they are total nonentities.
I'm not sure what anyone else sees in the programmes but I see little point in watching someone else buy, build or sell a house.
Then there are the hyper-upbeat presenters often with music to match that are repetitive and become tiresome and predictable as does the whole show.

I honestly watch very little TV these days; not particularly on purpose but mainly because I can usually find something else more interesting to do. Sometimes I do decide to watch something but after about 20 minutes find that I really can't be bothered. I used to make an effort to watch Question Time, but even that has a hard time maintaining my interest these days. I have the same issue with newspapers. It all seems such a waste of time.

But radio is a completely different matter. I have radios in my workshop, my study, the kitchen and even on the scaffolding when I'm working up there, and they are mostly always on so I can follow programmes while wandering around. Unfortunately, only two of them are DAB and I'm not really looking forward to analogue transmissions being switched off!

Of course, for really wasting time, the internet has no equal.

Has anyone else ever tried playing Strip Property Ladder, Strip Grand Designs, Strip Location Location Location etc? You each pick a set of phrases (e.g. "I think they're failing to maximise the house's value", "I'm very concerned", "ooh, it's a proper farmhouse kitchen"), and every time someone says them, you take off a layer.

Of course, living in a C17 icebox, you can watch hours and hours of Strip Property Ladder and still be respectably dressed at the end of it.
