Oh wow - the chaise! I'm coming over to steal it! Isn't the yellow just perfect? And it looks so right sat in the window! Your front room is looking fantastic - you should be very proud.

Actually I find the expanse of pristine yellow upholstery completely intimidating. I can hear its siren voice imploring me to spill an entire bottle of red wine over it.

The yellow balance in the room is not right yet. The table lampshades will be replaced with ones of a better size and of the same silk fabric of the curtains. All the other chairs in the room - 4 Regency rosewood dining chairs, a Regency begere chair a William IV bergere and an early Victorian Chesterfield - are currently upholstered in matching brown leather which doesnt go too well with the yellow. Most of the leather chairs will eventually be moved into the end of the room which is lined with books. Those left in the drawing room end will need yellow cushions I guess, if they are not upholstered in the yellow.

This has been quite an interesting voyage into the realms of interior design.

NIgel - sorry, only just catching up on the thread.

There are 4 possible reasons why your connection speed seems restored:

a) it was a BB provider issue that is now resolved (or even a concatenation issue - your exchange connection will be shared with a number of other (upto 50 I think) users who may also have been uploading stuff yesterday);

b) offspring's CoD session has now terminated;

c) the wine; :wink:

d) cosmic karma - some greater being took note of the fabulous pic of your room, and the fulsome praise of PPUK worthies last night and decided to give you a break.

Whatever the reason, I have rarely found when faced with similar problems, that the call to Bangalore provides any serious prospect of resolution - it does seem to be a necessary virtual hurdle to clear though, before they will engage any sort of real-person technical response in the form of engineers' visits. After similar problems, they e-v-e-n-t-u-a-l-l-y sent a chappy round with a ladder to recable a couple of hundred yards across the fields and we've never looked back.

Happy you are back on line. Like others, I love your room, but doubt I would have the courage to be so bold myself.

I have seen the pic of the disputed carpet and may go to view it. The yellow and green are fine, but I am not 100% sure about the salmon and brick reds. I currently have a silk carpet in the room with those latter colours.

A week earlier this is coming up (cf Hallway thread) - in this case a young Achilles rather than Hercules or David. Cant really justify the expense but I am tempted. It would go on top of my one of my bookcases.

Certainly most ISP's will allow a contention ratio of up to 50, unless you have a special exclusive contract with them (which is considerably more costly). And as I said a couple of times above, the youngster's bandwidth hogging was almost certainly a factor.

But I'm glad that FF's advice to leave it to heal up overnight proved accurate.

Just on the colours - the lampshades will help a lot, and so would cushions. I think brown leather goes with anything, but if you did want to re-upholster the dining chairs later I'd do some in yellow velvet and some in green.

Achilles is lovely, and that touch of white will make friends with the fireplace and ceiling.

On carpets, I'm starting to wonder if it's actually possible to buy a traditional carpet that doesn't have one or two extra colours in it, so maybe just have to accept the odd flash of brick red.

I like the colours, but the central medallion has gone a bit wonky. Sometimes it doesn't notice when it's on the floor but in a formal room it can look awkward. It's something I always look for as it would bother me, lots of people have no issue with it.

Isn't that one of the idiosyncracies that define hand-knotted carpets? We have a few, and the fact that they are slightly off centre or asymmetrical is one of the features we like...

It really depends on what sort it is, perfectly acceptable in tribal pieces and can indeed make them more charming. Larger carpets made in dedicated workshops on fixed looms I would expect to have a well resolved and symmetrical design. A city carpet that has a slightly squashed centre is just plain wrong to me because it is a failure to execute the intended design correctly. This would be distinct from any intentional mistake, which would be something very tiny.
