Sorry I havent replied. Its been a while since ive been here.
For scratching, I used three pieces of lath cut to points. Dont over think it, you need something to scratch it as per a youtube video. You could use practically anything.
I bought in from Anglialime. There are other places as you suggest. By bigger quantities if you can, ie 100kg much much cheaper than 15kg tubs. It will last in a tub for ages, not sure about in a builders bag. Call the suppliers, they really are a great source of info.
For putting it on: Im sure the pros would shoot me down but this is what worked for me, and finish is great if i say so myself:
First coat (I only used two)
1: cut back existing plaster so anything loose is gone. I cut angles of edges at 45 degrees.
2: Wet it down. Make sure its very damp. This might take sevral brushes with a old paint brush.
3: If on stone i hurled it on. Basically slap it on wall with a trowell where there are deep cracks in underlying stone so its all in .I then smoothed on with a wet Plasterer float (I used a metal one).
4: Get it something like, ie doesnt have to be smooth but make sure its even. Use a plasterers darby to flatten over a wide area. Keep it less than flush to existing plasterwork as dont forget you have to skim.
5: leave it an hour or two then scratch it.
I waited about a week until looked dryer, then wet down again. I skimmed using plasterers float, and kept going over in one direction. As a beginer keep the float very wet and clean (watch for bits of muck on it that can get embedded. Once skimmed and looking flat give it an hour or two until starts to dry then skim again with wet plasters float:
One more tip. If your going across a big wall and cant get your level ie 8ft across, knock a baton of wood into wall level with plaster on other side minus a few mills. Skim to this. Do other side then remove and fill.

Regarding point 2 above, I’d recommend using a pump-up sprayer rather than a brush . . . the sort of thing often used by gardeners.
Also useful (essential?) for limewashing.

I've got something like this that I have used for plastering in the past.
And a small metal float. I used to have a slightly larger float with a wooden handle that I had sanded to better fit my hand, but the ex husband has got it.
I learned when I was doing gypsum work that most plasterers floats, are not designed for someone with a size 6-7 hand. The blisters were not helpful, so unless I can find a larger float with a wooden handle I might have to cope with the small one.
