Interesting. I’d guess it’s because, outside of kitchens, very few devices these days are high power so a 30A circuit is overkill in most cases. It would also save cable and copper, so a bit more eco-friendly.
In practice, I’d say the modern requirement is for many more sockets rather than lots of power, which no doubt why those plug-in ‘socket strips’ are so popular these days. I have about 10 sockets in my study but I doubt I’m using more than 3A even with everything switched on!
Indeed, the average household uses about the same amount of energy than a house did in 1970, but uses many more sockets. Of course much of this is due to more efficient fridges and other kitchen appliances.
