Mmmmh. The walls at the ground floor of my 3 storey house are approx 1m. By the first floor they are 1 brick thick. Original part of the house this is, built C1780/90. The smallest bedroom is currently an office and until about 5 years ago I could hear nothing from next door. Now I hear everything. The room in the house next door is their bathroom and I can hear their conversation, the lid of the loo going up and down and what they are doing.
By sheer coincidence I found out why by talking to a friend who is the administrator of the building company that altered the bathroom. They removed a cupboard against the party wall and the loo was resited there. The cupboard obviously acted as a sound buffer.
